How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My goal and hope is to start a business where I can sell vegetables, flour and shoes. I'm always development minded so I intend to start something that will bring development to my home. I'll need a capital of between $200 to $300 but since I don't have the money right now, I'll wait until my children secure employment so that they can support me with the required capital.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give Directly saved me from poverty. My children were ever sad because they could not afford to stay in school due to school fees arrears. Right now you have helped me to clear the school fees balance and my children are comfortably studying without any worries. You have not only helped my children but many in this village. Most children who had dropped out of school are now back to class. You have also helped me to buy a cow, which was always my wish. I don't see anything you should do better because you are already perfect. I'm very grateful to you Give Directly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have no stable job so I just sell charcoal on small scale while my husband is too old to work. I'm the bread winner but most of the time we hardly have food to eat. I took $170 of the second transfer and bought 6 bales of maize flour, 50 kg of rice, 12 kg of wheat flour and 3 litres of cooking oil. My family had suffered because of hunger since food prices have really hiked. I'm grateful because right now I have food security in my house and this gives me so much peace. My 2 sons who are in secondary school had been sent away from school because of the school fees arrears totaling to $300, therefore I also went to the school and paid that debt. Previously, we used to struggle from hand to mouth and incase I'm left with any little amount, that is when I consider paying school fees. I would even sell my hens sometimes, to pay their school fees. I'm glad that Give Directly made it easier and now my sons are concentrating on their studies without fear of being send home for school fees. in secondary. I had always wished to rear a cow and see it multiply, I even saved $100 from the first transfer for this purpose, hence I took $160 from the second transfer , added it to the $100 and bought a cow. I'm happy that I now have a long term investment and I can sell the calves later when I have an emergency. I also bought few clothes for myself with the remaining money since the ones I had are already torn. I can't clearly recall how much the clothes did cost.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home busy preparing breakfast for myself before I could take out the livestock to the field for grazing. I was surprised to receive an SMS on my mobile phone since it was rare for me to receive any message at that time of the day. I had to call one son who confirmed it and informed me that it was the transfer from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with joy receiving by transfer since at first, I doubted the program.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Seeing my kids learning without any disruption due to school fees after clearing their fees balances has given me peace of mind. Previously, I was worried about their future since they were always at home. Having achieved my desire of supporting their educational needs is the biggest difference in my daily life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The receipts of the transfer came as a surprise to me since I did not imagine getting such a huge amount of money very soon. I had two kids in secondary school so the first thing was to clear their fee arrears. I spent KES 27,000 to clear their fees. This is because their education was constantly interrupted due to the huge fee balance. Currently, they are happy learning without problems and optimistic that their performance will improve. Also, I bought a high-breed dairy cow for KES 26,000. I had desired to start dairy farming which is a very profitable venture. Once it reproduces, I will be supplying milk to the nearby market to earn a living. This income from the milk will help me in supporting the education of my children. Lastly, I bought enough food with the remaining amount.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I'm glad that Givedirectly has visited me, on receiving my cash transfer of 55,000 KSH I plan to buy my family beds and mattresses, for a long time we have been forced to sleep on hard surface. We wake up very tired and some of my sons opt to sleep at their friends places. So I have window shopped around and I see that the whole budget will run to around 50,000ksh. I hope that the remaining amount can help pay my son's school fees arrears for his secondary education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My daughter gave me a grandchild and it's something amazing that I can never forget.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My most pressing needs, is lack of beddings which make me very uncomfortable, I want to see my sons enjoy their nights at home and not in the neighborhood. Seeing my son out of school all the time is also disturbing, I want to see him attend school all of the term and come up with good results.
