How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
So far there is no new goal that emerged apart from the previous ones. All that I had in mind including the renovation of my house was accomplished. Initially, the house was almost collapsing and I was always worried about our safety. I am so glad that this was resolved and as a family, we can't thank enough the organisation.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the organization did well by considering all our needs and came up with the idea of giving us cash transfers. This has enabled us to own assets live livestock, beautiful houses that we couldn't purchase anytime soon because of the hardships we've been through. Therefore, according to me, I have not seen any unfavorable action they have done so far
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on clearing school fees of KES 10000 for my four children who are in primary schools. I am happy that they will be able to sit for their exams without any interference. Also, I bought new clothes for my kids since the initial ones were old and it has been affecting their self-esteem. As their mother, I am happy that this was settled in good time. To add to that, I bought chicken at KES 1200 which I am now keeping on my homestead as an asset. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family and other household items like utensils and cutlery.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 10 AM when I was preparing breakfast for my children then my phone started vibrating continuously. I was not sure whether it was a message or an incoming call therefore I asked my helper to confirm since I am illiterate. On checking, he realized that it was an Mpesa message from Segovia Technology. I had finally received my first transfers as promised during the enrolment period. I was overwhelmed with joy and I remember leaving what I was up to and focused on how best I could utilize the money appropriately together with my family.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am now a proud owner of a very spacious modern house. I have always wished to renovate my previous hut that was on the verge of collapsing due to the substandard building materials I used while building it. Since I didn't have enough money to purchase quality building materials, our house used to flood during the rainy seasons. It has been tough all along considering that my family is quite big( six members) and I didn't have a stable source of income to save the situation. In addition to that my family was growing and there was a dire need for building a separate room for my sons and daughters. At some point, I had to ask for accommodation for my sons because they were now teenagers, and sleeping with them in the same room was getting uncomfortable. During winter, my furniture and clothes could get damaged. These were some of the frustrating moments in my life that I wouldn't wish anyone to go through. The transfers from GiveDirectly have helped me achieve great milestones. Previously, we solely depended on selling vegetables and palm wine. On a good day, we would earn around KES 200. This was very little to cater to the family's needs leave alone building a house. I am glad that through GiveDirectly, I am no longer stressed, worried, or even feel embarrassed like before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a larger portion of my first cash transfer on buying several building materials which include; bricks ad hardcore at KES 10000, twenty pieces of iron sheets at KES 20000, seven bags of cement at KES 5600, building poles and nails at a total of KES 2500. This was purposely for the construction of a new permanent house because the previous one was a temporary grass-thatched hut that was almost collapsing. In addition to that, I gave the mason KES 10000 as his labor charge. Later on, I cleared school fees arrears of KES 4000 for my four children who are still in primary schools and they are now studying peacefully. With the remaining amount of money(KES 2900), I m using it in buying enough foodstuff like maize flour, cereals, sugar for my family which would sustain us for a couple of days.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means getting a new house. This is because the house I am living currently is at the verge of collapsing. I have a family of six children who sleep in the same house. My biggest worry is the safety of my children. Anytime this house can collapse and the lives of my family are in danger. I depend on casual jobs which are not reliable and even the income I get which is less than $3 a day, is not enough to renovate or build a new house. Anything I get is solely used to buy food for my family. I will use the first transfer to renovate it which cost around $ 500 then use the remaining amount to buy livestock as an investment for my children's education.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest part of the day is in the afternoon. This is because, during this time I return home after work and I get time to rest. My main source of income is tapping local brew from palm trees. I wake up early everyday to go tap this brew and finish in the afternoon. So during this time I sell the brew and by 1pm, I am done with my business. I then come home with something for my family. Seeing my family at this time brings joy as they have something to eat for lunch and for supper.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Having a family of six children without a stable source of income is making life more difficult for me. My children need to access basic education, food, clothing and shelter. It has been difficult to meet these needs because there are no reliable Jobs. What is even more worrying is the condition of my house that poses a threat to the lives of my children. The biggest hardship that I have ever faced therefore is unemployment.
