How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year and beyond, I hope to improve my dairy family as well as venture into crop farming. This will ensure that I have readily available feeds for my livestock and food for the family. In addition, I intend to start a small shop business at home where I will be selling a variety of products like sugar, and salt to our neighbours. This will supplement my earnings from dairy farming.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Givedirectly did well in giving cash and allowing the beneficiaries to decide on how best to impact their lives with the transfer. Offering training during the early stages put us in the position to understand the program better. I feel everything was conducted well and there is nothing that they should improve in their processes.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a small-scale dairy farmer owning one dairy cow. I desired to boost my farming by purchasing one Ayrshire cow to improve my milk production. Currently, I produce 8 litres per day which earns me approximately $3.5. After receiving the recent transfer, I spent $400 on buying one more dairy cow. I am hoping it would have given birth in the coming 4 months. I am optimistic that I will be able to get $4 per day more once it reproduces. This income would be enough to support our 3 kids' education as well as feed our family of 5 members. Furthermore, I used $100 to pay off the fee balances for our 3 children who are in a private school.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was about doing my daily chores when I heard a message notification on my mobile phone. I decided to check it's content and upon checking it was a mobile money notification indicating that I had received KES 55000 to my account from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and said a big thank you to God. I had never received such aid before and I took a deep breath and smiled for I knew that the plans which I had would come to reality.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before GiveDirectly came into our lives, we used to rear one cow which we were given by our relative so that we can have milk for making tea. We couldn't get enough milk for sale since the production was low and we would use it all. Now we have lactating dairy cow and a heifer which I bought with the transfers and that has brought us joy as we have our own cow and the milk production has gone up. Now we have some milk for sale and that has increased our daily earnings. Now we got enough money for buying food and save some for school fees.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We do farming as our main source of income and in most cases this activity is seasonal. It would take us months before harvesting and selling the produce and that means their is no sustainable source of income to support our two children who are in school. When I got transfer from GiveDirectly, I bought one lactating dairy cow and a heifer at a cost of KES 44000. Before, I was rearing one cow which I was given by a relative. I saw it would be good to have cows which shall give us milk for sale thus earn income through the sale of milk. The earnings shall enable me to pay school fees for my children. The remaining amount of KES 11000, I spent on paying school fees for my children who are in school. I am thankful to GiveDirectly who eased my burden of paying school fees.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Farming and casual jobs make up my livelihood. I am a mother of three who wishes nothing but the best for my children. It's my dream to see them have good access to their daily basic needs and good education when they start going to school. I believe farming offers me a better source of income given that I do not have formal employment. I work hard to expand this so that my income would get higher. This cash transfer to me means, a dream come true. I am planning to use KES 40000 to buy a dairy cow. This is an added asset to my family. I currently have two, thus having three means higher liters of milk production and a higher rate of livestock growth in my farming. I feel in the next 3 years when my firstborn will be joining form one, I will have some calves to sell to pay his school fee while the daily milk sales will cover up our daily household expenditure.
What is the happiest part of your day?
As a mother, I strive to see a happy family. Our health and general wellbeing are always my top priority. To achieve this, I need peace of mind and support from my family. To me, peace, love, and unity are my biggest joy. It has enabled me to provide for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a young mother of three primarily depending on farming. I practice mixed farming to enhance my income. Currently, I have two dairy cows that are about to calf down. Crops farming are mostly affected by pests and low rainfall. This makes my source of income unreliable. Poor source of income is my major challenge.
