How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than how it would have been because I managed to buy a new sewing machine. Initially, I used to hire from a friend and little I could earn in a day I had to share it with her. There I ended up encountering a loss and meeting my family's needs was not easy. All has changed now because ever since I purchased it, whatever I earn is all mine, and though that I have been able to save a lot for my children since they are still young. By the time they will be joining the school I will have prepared myself. Apart from that we no longer skip meals like the way we used to do courtesy of GiveDirectly.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by helping the needy individuals in my entire region. To be honest, everyone in my village needed financial assistance and this could be seen even on the type of houses we owned, some of our children had dropped out of school and no one possed even a single living asset. However, this is now a history becsue all has transformed positively and the village has developed greatly. We sometimes wish GD could consider us soon.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying a sewing machine at KES 15000. This has been my dream to own it for quite some time but I couldn't afford to purchase it becsue it was soo expensive. Also, I bought a dairy at KES 17000 and a goat KES 5000 and they now serve as the assets that I can lean on anytime. With the remaining amount, I bought enough food and decent clothes for my children

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I learned that I had received my first transfer at around 5 am when I was heading to the farm. I felt so happy since it was my first time getting such a huge amount of money. Up to date, it's still like a miracle to me.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I now have goats in my homestead. I have been longing to own them for so many years but I could not afford them because they were quite expensive and the little I was earning was only enough for my family's basic. I settled on buying them because they reproduce twice a year and their offsprings mature faster compared to other domestic animals. Also, they can survive in any climatic condition, and because my village is a semi-arid region I believe they will survive. My plan is when they reproduce and multiply, I will exchange the matured offsprings for a dairy cow. With time I will be getting for free and some of the litres will be for my family consumption and sell the rest to my neighbours. I am positive that the little I will be earning from the business will enable me to achieve most of my goals.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some beddings such as a bed and mattress. This was to replace the old traditional beddings which I was not comfortable with. I also bought some livestock such as goats which will serve as the living assets that I will lean on in case of any financial difficulties. I also bought some decent clothes for my children and enough foodstuffs, that would take us to the next harvesting seasons.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
"My wish has been to own a business motortaxi, but due to financial arrears this dream has never materialized. Receiving this money means fulfilling it, since I am planning to spend 97,000 shillings to purchase it. This is going to generate income for my family of 4 members. I can make 15,000 shillings in a month. Approximately, my family spend 200 shillings for basic needs such as food.We can save the rest of amount for our future life.Apart from motorbike, I will spend the remaining amount to buy a tailoring machine for my wife so that she can be independent. The income she will getting from it will also support us educating our children."
What is the happiest part of your day?
"Evening is happiest part of the day. It is at this time when husband comes with food that I prepare for my family."
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
"I am a charcoal vendor. This job is tiresome and earns me 200 shillings in a day. Getting customers is not guaranteed. Sometimes we can spend a whole day without food. Lack of a stable source of income is my biggest hardship in life."
