How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Every night, as I stand vigilant outside the health center, I feel the weight of my family's needs pressing upon me. The meager wage I earn as a watchman is not enough to provide for them comfortably. A dream has taken root in my heart, nurtured by the stars that watch over me during those quiet hours. My aspirations are simple yet significant; with the means to do so, I envision purchasing water tanks for storing this precious resource. The aridness of our region has created a dire need for water, and by meeting this need, I can bring relief to both my community and my kin. By selling water and utilizing it for irrigation, I can break free from the limitations of my current role and ensure my family's comfort. As I stand guard through the night, I hold onto the hope that this dream until it becomes a reality.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I consider GiveDirectly an excellent organization. The organization was determined to give the locals additional power. Most of the kids in the families that dropped out of school in our region owing to school fees are now back. GiveDirectly is the origin of their return to school. Soberly, I must admit that GiveDirectly is an important organization.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the second cash transfer, it felt like a lifeline once again. The weight of uncertainty that had been pressing down on my shoulders seemed to lift, if only for a moment. Without hesitation, I knew exactly how I wanted to use this support to shape a better future for my family. My children's education was paramount, and I used a significant portion of the money, $300 to be precise, to settle their school fee arrears. This decision was not just about finances; it was about investing in their dreams, in the possibility of a brighter tomorrow. As the school confirmed their continued enrollment, I could see the determination in their eyes, grateful for the opportunity to learn without the looming threat of being sent home. With a heart full of gratitude and the remaining amount in hand, I embarked on a project that had been a dream for far too long. Our living situation had been cramped and far from ideal, with all of us squeezed into a single room. Privacy was a luxury we couldn't afford. Therefore, I put in the effort and hard work to finally complete the construction of a small but comfortable house for my children. The joy that radiated from their smiles when they stepped into their own space was immeasurable. It wasn't just a house; it was a symbol of our resilience and the progress we were making against the odds.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I am working as a watchman in a nearby village dispensary. I was distraught because my son in college and four other children in high school had informed me that they were about to be expelled for failing to pay their fees. I was not at ease after their call, and as the day passed and I continued to consider where to get money, I received an mpesa message, and I was alone. When I checked, I had received KES 55000, which gave me some hope, and I happily took my phone and called my children again, promising them that their studies would not be disrupted. I paid for them, and it made me happy to see them return to class.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
It makes the biggest difference in my daily life to be able to pay fees when I was not expecting any help from anyone. I currently have four children enrolled in school, college, and high school, and raising their fees would have been difficult if I had not received the transfer. I am grateful because it would have taken me months to search for bursaries that are not always reliable. They are now in school, so I will have more time to look for work as the new semester begins.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been working on a house for several years, but it is been stalled because the cost of educating my children is too much for me. I work as a watchman in a nearby dispensary, so I can not fully care for my children while also building the house. When I received my first transfer, I went ahead and purchased the remaining materials for the construction, which included iron sheets, timber, door frames and shutters, and nails. Aside from that, I am extremely grateful that my children are no longer being sent home due to unpaid fees. My four children are currently enrolled in various levels of education. One is in college, and the others are in high school and primary school. Raising fees for them would have been difficult given the nature of my job, which does not pay well, but thanks to the transfer, they are now enrolled in school. Finally, I bought some new furniture and furnished my home, as well as some groceries, with the money left over after fees and building materials.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
As a village elder in our area, I always expect some visitors at home. Many times, I have declined some appointments something that I do not consider to be a good practice. Receiving this money means changing my home to a better standard since I plan to construct a decent house that will be worthy of welcoming my visitors. The one at the moment is half open at the roof and I lack space for visitors. In addition, my children have been seeking refuge from my elder brother's home. What a worrying life! With this money, I intend to spend a portion of it ($500) to ensure this dream comes to reality. My other major project is to install water pipes in my home. This will act as my investment plan since I intend to use this project as my source of income. I will be selling the water to my neighbors and I believe this will earn me good money because our area lacks clean water. This project will cost me the entire remaining amount ($600). Hence, this is basically what receiving this money means to me.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Despite all the life challenges I have experienced in my life, I am so grateful to God for the many surprises that I have had. Imagine not receiving a salary for a whole year! It has been through God's miracle to come this far. All through, I have been participating in health outreach organized by our facility. This has been my greatest source of income to support my children's needs. Although the income from these activities has been low, usually $5 per day, also not consistent, it has helped me to provide for my family and this is what has been giving meaning to my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The retrenchment from work at Kenya Port Authority (KPA) in 2021 marked the beginning of challenges in my life. Since I lost my job, my marriage was also at stake. This caused the separation between my wife and me because I could no longer provide for our needs as usual. The separation pushed me to come home to take care of my children since my mother was also sick. It was so stressful taking care of them single-handedly. I decided to look for jobs within our area and fortunate enough, I managed to find one. I am currently a security guard at our nearby health center. The income from this job is usually $80 per month, which is also not consistent. As I speak, I have not received payments for the whole of last year. What a life! This has forced me to engage in other casual jobs like outreaches conducted by the hospital to earn some cash. It has always been so tough to provide for my family's basic needs. This situation has robbed away my joy as a father and hence, the financial crisis stands out as the main challenge.
