How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Receiving the transfers enabled me to expand the clothes business that I had by having more stock. The business was very small before and would only provide enough to help me make the required contributions in my table banking group but not enough to take care of other household requirements. After I started receiving the transfers, I was able to improve the business which improved my profits that made it possible for me to keep my family running during the two months that my husband had no job without resorting to borrowing or taking loans.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I am running a business on second-hand clothes which I feel is not doing as well as I thought it would, so I am thinking of starting an extra business on foodstuff for extra income. It can take as long as a month or more to clear a new stock for the clothes that I sell but foodstuff must be sold within the day meaning that I will be having a daily income for my daily needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
In preparation for the new school year, I decided to spend most of the money I recently received to purchase school requirements such as books and school uniform for my children. I did that because I wanted to avoid the hike in prices for school supplies that is usually witnessed at the beginning of the year together with the rush and scramble that comes with everyone hitting the book stores during that period. I spent the little money I had left on foodstuff.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Right now I am financially stable because of GD transfers. I have been saving part of my transfers and running a small groundnuts business. This has helped me raise money to meet our daily needs well. I no longer have to go borrowing to buy food as it was the case before the transfers. I am planning to continue investing part of my transfers in savings so that I can be able to get a good capital to start a stable business. I would want to make good use of the support I get from GD to turn around my financial life completely.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My new goal, for now, is to buy new household items. The ones I have are old and are not showing a good picture. I do struggle to invite my friends to visit me because of the old stuff I have in the house. The seats are weak and cushions are worn out. Utensils too are old and some broken. I do not feel comfortable using them anymore.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on savings in our monthly merry-go-round savings. I plan to use my savings to start a business. Currently, I do not have a stable income because I depend on income from a small groundnut business and I struggle to raise money to meet our needs. I would want to have a business which will help me meet my family needs well and in time through the profits. I would not want to struggle as I have in the past.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since I started receiving these transfers, my life has improved as I have been able to buy more household items such as a television set, replaced my old cushions with new ones, more utensils and other personal items. What I earn from my business alone would not enable me to buy all these items I have managed to buy within this short period of time because the little profits I make are usually spent on basic household needs and I am usually left with barely anything after the expenses to spend such expensive items.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I have been hawking clothes for a year and I would like to have a permanent shop where I can be selling the clothes and even other items such as shoes for more income. Setting up a boutique is quite expensive because I will need to have a variety unlike what I am currently selling. This is why I never ever thought in that direction before, but with these transfers, I will be able to achieve that after a few months of saving. Hawking is not such a bad idea but it is quite tiring and usually gets limited by bad weather conditions, especially during the rainy seasons when I am not able to move around in the rain. Such periods are usually very tough for me financially because I am not able to provide for my family hence the need to have a permanent business station.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have plans of expanding my clothes business which I currently hawk into a big boutique, therefore I have been saving most of my monthly transfers to enable me to achieve this dream. I saved most of the money I received this month in our table banking group as I usually do every month because that is the only place I will not be able to access them untill I have the right amount to set up the boutique. I then gave out some of the transfer to our church as tithe and spent the rest on foodstuff,

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
I have a goal of furnishing the house that I have in my rural. I now have enough money to cater for all these unlike before. I am going to buy all the furniture and everything that I will need.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is joining tabled banking. The monthly transfers are barely enough to start any big project. The transfers instilled the saving culture in me something that I never had before.I am very excited that out of this I am going to start a bigger project. We are a group of 10 members each contributing KES 4000 out of it I will have saved KES 40,000.As soon as the savings mature I will expand my clothe selling business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 4000 of the transfers on savings through table banking. We are a group of 10 women and we are saving this amount monthly.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I realized in the morning that I had received the transfers. I was going through my message folder when I saw a message that I had received the transfer. I realized that the message came in late at night that is why I had not seen it. The mood in the house went frenzy in excitement as I shared the good news with my family. The state of hopelessness that I was in ended at that point in time and joy replaced it.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I prioritize that way because I would love to grow my business and have a stable business then buy some household good that I lack then save some so that incase of any emergency I have where to start from.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is health crisis because mostly children get sick most times and it even finds if I don't have money sometimes so it really affects me. Secondly my concern is getting daily subsistence because with the current situation sometimes I don't get how to feed my children and lastly, unemployment status in Kenya is getting worse and I don't even know how the future will be especially with my children.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambition in life is to have my own apartment and even rent it out to get some income.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
In the morning once I wake up I first do household chores and attend to my children and ensure they go to school then later go to my clothing business and if I get some laundry work I can also go to get extra cash. On my free time I love watching television at home with my children before I start preparing for supper.
