How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I own a plot in the nearby shopping center where I initially constructed a small structure that unfortunately got destroyed by termites. Currently, our plan is to demolish the existing structure and embark on the construction of a new residential block, given its strategic location at the periphery of the shopping center. I am optimistic about commencing the construction process this January, as I anticipate receiving my share and securing a loan from the Sacco of which I am a member. This dual financial approach is intended to facilitate the realization of our goal to build a new and more resilient residential block, overcoming the setbacks posed by termite damage and contributing to the overall improvement of our living situation.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my perspective, GiveDirectly has made a significant positive impact in our village. Previously, I used to have many villagers coming to my house seeking casual labor opportunities every morning. However, after enrolling and receiving the transfers, they have ventured into their own businesses. The uniqueness of GiveDirectly lies in the direct transfer of money to our phones, facilitating easy access through direct payments or collection in the local shopping center. To further enhance the effectiveness of the support, it could be beneficial if the transfer were split into two, ensuring that recipients do not fall into debt before receiving the second installment after the initial transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
As a retired teacher, I concluded my teaching profession in 2004 and have since been living at home after the passing of my wife. Throughout this period, my primary focus has been ensuring that my children receive the education they deserve. I am proud that all of them have been eager to pursue their studies. Currently, I have a son studying abroad and a daughter in her final year of secondary school. Despite being in his final year, my son has initiated the construction of his house, and I have been actively involved in sourcing construction materials and overseeing their delivery to ensure their quality is maintained. Although he works to earn income besides his studies, I have provided support by covering the transportation costs to my doorstep. Thus far, I have spent $420 on labor charges and material transportation. Additionally, I allocated $20 for clearing the compound and organizing the delivered blocks and sand. The remaining $10 was used for my personal needs, including food and other essentials. This journey reflects our collective efforts toward the pursuit of education and the construction of a home, and I am grateful for the progress we have made.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at the shopping center, tending to an errand, when my phone suddenly buzzed. Upon checking, I received a text message confirming the receipt of my share. I chose to keep this good news to myself for security reasons, but I couldn't contain my joy because I knew I could finally fulfill my dream of owning a dairy cow. I am incredibly grateful for the support.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life has been the rapid achievement of my goals. I was able to acquire goats, which I once deemed impossible due to financial constraints. It's truly a dream come true, and the ownership of these goats fills me with immense happiness and satisfaction. I'm grateful for the assistance that has significantly improved our living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Eight years ago, I tragically lost my wife, leaving me to single-handedly care for our 11 children. It was an incredibly challenging time in our lives, but we are grateful for God's guidance. As a retired teacher, I rely on a modest government pension. However, the burden of school fees forced me to sell my goats, leaving me with nothing. When I received my first transfer, I made the decision to invest the entire $20 in purchasing goats, as they are relatively easy to care for and can find their own food. I am overjoyed that, finally, I have been able to achieve this goal in such a short period of time.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
We depend on goat keeping as a source of livelihood in our area. The prevailing warm climatic conditions coupled with plenty of shrubs and bushes that the goats can feed on favor their productivity, they multiply very fast and it is a quick form of wealth creation. I used to own 34 goats but I sold all of them to cater for an air ticket for my son who had gotten a scholarship to go for further studies in Hungary. The goat shelter is empty and it breaks my heart since we value goat keeping a lot, I am just comforted by the fact that it went for a good course. I am so excited about the transfers which are in the offing, it is going to enable me to purchase other goats and restore my source of livelihood. I intend to purchase 20 goats for $800 and use the rest to pay for school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In December I joined a group of 30 people where we do pooling of resources in turns every month to empower every member to get resources for self-development. It was my turn in February and I fetched $ 150, I was extremely happy since I had a debt that I had not settled after purchasing a plot in Koriema Center. The ownership has since been transferred to me and I am free to develop at any time. It was quite an achievement.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My wife passed on 3 years ago but I am yet to come to terms with her demise. My life completely changed for the worse and now I am left alone to fend for our children. It has never been easy, in my old age now I needed her company the most. I can only relive truly fond memories we had. I have kept her framed photo in my bedroom so that I can be seeing and it gives me solace whenever I feel lonely. Thoughts about her are still fresh in my mind. She left a huge gap in my life. I have not been able to adjust to the new way of life and it worries me a lot.
