How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is very different as compared to how it was before I started receiving the transfers. I was a casual laborer, I used to sell charcoal to earn a living. This was not sustainable but I had no option. Upon receiving the transfers, I decided to venture into farming. I bought goats for rearing and prepared my farm for planting season. I am way better than I was before the transfers.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I think it is impactful and beneficial to most of the people who have received the cash. Living standards have improved and many have been empowered to reach their goals. I sincerely cannot record any bad intention all I see is goodness.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
When I received my recent transfers I bought goats for rearing. This cost me Kes 21,000. Besides that, I also bought new beddings since the ones I had were old and worn out. At least I can now enjoy my sleep unlike before when use to wake up with an aching back. The remaining amount I spent on plowing my farm in preparation for the planting season. This has been a transformation process for my life.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
I am happy that I now have assets to depend on in case of a financial crisis in terms of goats. Owning them makes the biggest difference in my daily life because, through them, I am sure to alleviate the poverty that had stricken my household. I can readily depend on them in case I am faced with a financial challenge. Even as they reproduce and increase in number, I will be able to sell in order to invest the money in some other income-generating activities like starting a business. Through this, then I will be having a stable source of income that will help me to fulfil the household basic needs effectively which has been a challenge for long because I had nothing to rely on.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt happy the moment I saw the transfer notification from GiveDirectly on my phone. I had finally received the money that I have been anxiously waiting for. I couldn't stop thinking about how this money would transform my whole life. I thanked them for fulfilling their promise of giving us the transfer.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent KES 24000 of the first transfer on purchasing seven goats which I am currently keeping in my homestead. The main reason why I opted to rear these goats is that they will serve as a saving for the future of my children's education as well as meeting other financial needs. I am assured that once they reproduce, it will give me an opportunity to sell the mature offsprings and raise more money thus my children will continue with their education without much struggle. In addition to this, I bought a new mattress and a bed to replace the old and worn out beddings that I have been using. I also took KES 7800 to hire the services of oxen to plough my farm. I am now expecting a good harvest, unlike the other seasons. I am spending the remaining amount to cater to my household basic needs such as providing daily foodstuffs and also paying for some household expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Burning charcoal for a living has never been easy because of its cumbersome nature. At some point I felt that I needed to do a lighter job and went ahead to start a cafe business. However, it did not succeed because of inadequate capital. This forced me to resume burning charcoal which has been my source of income to date. Therefore, receiving this money means reopening my hotel business. I will pair up with my sister who has experience in the same, thus reducing the cost of hiring an extra person. This business will help us take care of our children and give them the quality life they deserve. In addition to this, we will set up a goat rearing project that will help us cater for financial emergencies.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Imagine spending an entire day uprooting trumps to burn charcoal! Who wouldn't want to rest after such a hustle? I always long for evenings and my face brightens when the sun begins to set. This is the only time I get to relax as well as bond with my children, thus making evening the happiest part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraint has been my biggest hardship ever since I separated with my husband 6 years ago. Life has been very tough because I do not have anyone to support me. Raising my 5 children single handedly is such a hustle because I do not have a stable source of income. It is not surprising to go for a whole week without any earnings. My family is suffering since I am unable to fully provide our needs especially food, education and clothing.
