How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My new goal is to buy more land and to construct another house. I had managed to buy two points of an acre and build one house with the second transfer money. I would like to buy more land so that I can get somewhere to cultivate and grow crops. The one that I bought is only enough to build houses and to rear a cow. I would also like to build another house so that the one that I had built can become a kitchen and the other one becomes the main house.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I liked the way GiveDirectly staff were polite in how they talked to us. They were also very ready to answer any question that we had. Everything went well and hence I do not see anything that I would recommend to them to change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of the recent transfer on buying a piece of land. I bought two points of an acre at KES 40000. I have been living at home with my brothers and sisters since I separated from my husband. My mother passed on and my father is living in a different location. Sometimes arguments and conflicts arise between us. It has thus been my wish to buy a piece of land where I can move to and live in peace with my five children. I just didn't have the money to make my dream come true. I do not have a stable job and hence I usually depend on my craftwork of making ropes and selling them to earn a living. The money that I make is only enough to buy food and pay school fees for my children. I had saved KES 17000 from the first transfer which I added to the remaining amount and I used it in building a house on the piece of land that I bought. I am thus so much thankful to GiveDirectly for their great help.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home doing the normal house chores when I saw my neighbour rushing into my compound, she was looking all happy, while I was wondering what might have contributed to her smile, I heard my phone ringing, though I greeted my neighbour first, that was when he broke the good news that he had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly, I immediately rushed to pick my phone in the house, upon checking I saw a Mpesa pin showing that I too had received the transfer, I was overwhelmed with joy because I knew that I would be able to purchase a dairy cow that I have been yarning to have. I am so grateful for the support that lifted my life.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my life is that I have managed to accomplish so much that I never thought that I would have achieved in a short period, in that, I bought a dairy cow meaning that I would be able to save up on the costly. I am also happy that was able to start a poultry-keeping project which I am hopeful that soon I will be able to earn an income out of it. I am so grateful for the support that I was given.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single mother blessed with five children. I normal weave baskets and ropes to earn an income, though a time I do casual jobs, I wanted a project that is sustainable and easy to manage, therefore I thought of starting a dairy cow project in which I used KES 30,000 in buying a cow, I then used KES 4500 in starting a poultry keeping project so that I would be able to earn extra cash from it. I am hopeful that with time I will be able to cut down on the cost of buying milk daily, lastly, I used the remaining part of the transfer in buying foodstuffs. I am grateful for the support that made me realize my dreams.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I currently live in 0.1acres of land which I recently inherited from my father . This is however small for my family of 6 and again I am not sure if my siblings will come for it at some point. When I receive this transfers, I will purchase an additional 0.2acres at KES 44000 so that I can build a house away from home and avoid family disputes on land. Furthermore, I intend to own a dairy cow for I currently buy milk at KES 45 a litre. This is consuming much of my finances given that I depend on making ropes for a living which I earn KES 500 weekly .This is not enough to buy food and clothing for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I usually wake up at 6 o'clock to prepare breakfast for my children. When they leave for school, I attend to house chores and rope making business. I at times look for firewood to sell at the hotels in the village. It's from this that I earn KES 200. I use this to purchase food for my children thus I am happy in the afternoon for my children have food to eat.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints is my biggest hardship. The rope making business is tiresome as I have to travel to Transmara to look for raw materials (sisal) . This is time consuming as compared to the money I get from the sales (KES 500). I had started a milk business but it failed because of insufficient funds to support it.
