How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a certificate in business management and my goal next year is to put it in practice . I want to build a big wholesale and a butchery on the side , at the shopping centre . I have done my research and their are no wholesales there . I will run the business myself since I'll take it as self employment , my sibling can help me in case there is much work . This will require a capital of $3,500 . I have already contacted the supplier and I'm working towards it . Honestly I do not know where I'll get this money as at now , can you help me again ?
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
One thing you are doing well is that you gave every house hold their transfers . For instance my mother and I benefitted separately . We have both done various development projects with our transfers , independently . This minimised a lot of possible conflicts . You have helped me to build a bigger house , and buy myself a phone , may you continue to help others too . I've not seen any mistake you have done for you should improve .
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I'm a first born in my family , currently married but my wife has no job . I do 'bodaboda' business and I'm the sole bread winner of both my families . When I received this money , I felt like I had been born again , I cannot explain my excitement because you may not fully understand . On that day , I was just unusually happy even before knowing that I will receive the money . When I read the Mpesa message I just rang my wife and instructed her to slaughter a hen because this called for celebration ! My dream of constructing a bigger house was now materialising . I spent $150 for wood , $90 for iron sheets and $80 for labour . Just like that I was able to build myself a new house ! Thanks to Give Directly , I now own two houses ! I bought this motorbike on a loan of $1,700 , so I do pay in instalments . I used $110 to pay part of the loan . Although you gave me a phone , I needed a smart phone to access the internet and even apply for jobs , hence I bought a phone worth $70 , I'm glad I can now access the internet anywhere anytime . I also paid school fees for my two siblings who are in primary school , this was $30 . Finally I spent $20 on shopping for basic household items like food and soap .

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was at home relaxing after completing all my household chores. I was alone in my house at around 6 pm when I received the transfer on my mobile phone. At first, I thought it was a message from my spouse. After checking, I was extremely happy when I saw the message indicating that I had received the transfer. I decided to call my husband who had traveled for work to inform him about the aid. It was the happiest moment of my life after receiving the aid since I had planned to spend it wisely to better our living conditions.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Owning a motorbike for myself is the biggest difference in my daily life. Currently, I am living a happy life because I earn enough income to comfortably support my family's basic needs like food. Previously, I had to hire motorbike from my neighbors which I am required to pay off every day.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My husband is a motorbike taxi driver. He has been doing this job for quite some time using someone's bike where he is required to pay off money every evening to the owner. I had desired to purchase a motorbike for him to improve his income to support the essential needs of our family. However, I lacked the financial muscles to accomplish this goal. After receiving the transfer, I spent KES 45,000 to purchase a second-hand motorbike for him. In addition, I used KES 2000 to purchase school uniforms for my son who was going to use old and torn uniforms something very embarrassing for me. Similarly, I spent KES 3,000 to clear all the fees arrears for my kid since he had huge fee arrears. With the remaining amount, I bought sufficient food for the family as well as new clothes for myself.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have been admiring to own a small shop where I will selling food staffs. This is because my husband is a motorcycle rider and he earns very little money that can not sustain our needs. I have done my analysis and I have seen a gap that when I open that shop, there is going to be a benefit. Therefore, I intend to use half of my transfer to start that business and will manage to help my husband pay our bills.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I really thank my husband for the kind and beautiful love he has been showing me over the last six months. Things are not good as we all expect and admire but we tolerate each other and a times he buy me clothes and shoes. This gesture for sure makes me feel very special and loved.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity and lack of school fees has been a big concern for us here in this household. Sometimes we have to go like whole day without eating, something that really affect our son who is very young. There was a time my son was sent home for school fees and unfortunately he found a very terrible scenario where the food itself is not there. It was very heartbreaking.
