How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Currently, my zeal for investment has taken me to a different level. After equipping my shop with the necessary items which my customers demanded the most, I developed another goal. I aim to construct some rental houses at my plot which is located at the trading center. I arrived at this idea after seeing the potential of my plot and realizing that rental houses do not disappoint in income generating if well managed. Concerning that, I have been saving some money for the same but I am planning to take a loan from a financial institution where I have been saving my money to accomplish my goal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Anyone sincere and objective will never see a fault in this organization. GiveDirectly booted me greatly in my business through the transfers thus enabling me to provide the basic needs for my family. It also restored my confidence in enabling me to construct a toilet at home. This was not just on the faces of people but also protected my family from diseases such as cholera.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Living in a home that had no toilet was very shameful and unhygienic. Not only that I was tired of going to the bush for nature calls but also I could not withstand the shame of taking my visitors to a neighbor's toilet. When I got the second transfer, I spend $300 to finalize the building of a toilet which I had started using the first transfer. Thereafter, I added some stock worth $240 to my shop where I sell a variety of items both foodstuff and personal effects. I opted to add the stock to stabilize my shop which has been a backbone for my family in matters of sustaining the family's basic needs.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was just at home relaxing and I didn't I wasn't expecting much that day. As my neighbours were passing by, I overheard a conversation from my neighbor that they had received their transfer. I rushed to where my phone was in the house and upon checking my messages, I found that I had received my transfers too.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I don't have to be worried and deny people from coming to my home because I have a toilet now and I'm nolonger a burden to my neighbor.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When my husband died in an accident and left me with our two kids, I never thought life would be hard as it has been for me for a couple of years. We have not been been having a toilet for quite some while after my toilet sank in and we have been using my neighbour's toilet. As much as I wanted to build a toilet for my family, I couldn't afford to because the little profit that I get from my general shop couldn't manage to build a toilet. With the recent transfers, I spend KES 15000 to build a toilet and spend the rest to add stock to my business. I'm happy now that I have a toilet at home and my business is doing better than before.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Am positive that this transfer will change by life, currently am operating a small shop which doesn't have enough stock. And soon I may be forced to close it down because I cannot pay the suppliers. Upon receiving the first transfer I intend to expand my business from a kiosk to a wholesale; I have enough customers and people are traveling to far areas because they cannot get the services around. On the second transfer I want to save for my 2 children who are in grade 4 and the last born in PP1. My dream is to see them go to the best private school which to me Allost Academy to me will give my children the best future in academics.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Recently i made a profit of KSH5000 which is my highest I ever dreamt, and this has encouraged me to work smart, and am learning how to expand my customer base.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I lost my spouse in 2019 through a tragic accident. I depended on him on everything as he was successful a business man. We had a shop together and at first after his demise, it was challenging to balance the transactions and ended up loosing everything. okAm left with small kids am struggling for their basic needs especially education and food. I have always wanted my kids to go to good private schools and get good education but because of financial constraints, they school at Ganze primary which is a public facility. Am lonely and I don't have anyone to share ideas with, even though I recently started a kiosk I still struggle to get stock and maintain it. I hope that soon I will be in a good position, to finance it and make good profits.
