How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am hoping to build a new house on the farm that I recently acquired. Being a single parent, I currently reside at my father's compound I feel that it is wise if I will shift to my compound for the sake of my two sons. I never had peace because of the unending disputes in my family concerning land issues. Therefore I believe that once I will ne able to acquire enough resources and build the house, all the troubles shall come to an end and I will be the happiest mother ever.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did so well by helping the needy people in my region. We were living in extreme poverty life with no hopes. Therefore the idea of offering us an unconditional cash transfer was the best for us. Currently, our lives have changed positively. A better percentage of us now have asets like livestock, decent houses, businesses, and even pieces of land. I, therefore, do not see anything negative that they should change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent $200 of my second transfer on clearing a debt. I was honestly not at peace from the frustrations and f being dispossessed because I had not fulfilled the pledge as agreed. This is because of the responsibilities that I had in my household. I am now glad to have full ownership of the piece of land after finally settling the deficit. Also, I bought a pair of oxen worth $300. I am grateful to own them because they will be helping me especially in ploughing my farm and those of my neighbours at a fee. I am therefore assured of getting some adequate yields unlike before. Initially, I used to till using my own hands which were so tiring and led to poor and low ha harvests because I could not afford to plough many acres ago. Additionally, should I encounter any financial crisis, I can decide to sell one and sort the matter. To add to that, I also paid fees for my two children who are in the neighbouring primary schools. With the remaining amount of money, I have been buying food for my children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 5 pm when I was warming some water to bathe my children when I received a message on my phone. I took the phone to confirm what kind of information it was; only to find that it was the first transfer from GiveDirectly. I felt so happy and thankful for receiving the money at a time when the drought was taking its shape.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The main difference that I can testify to after receiving the first transfer is the bed and the mattress. Initially, waking up tired was my daily routine since I had no bed or mattress. Currently, things have turned into a new leaf. I sleep well and comfortably because of the money I received from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, I bought four goats for KES 14000.00 because they have a faster birthrate compared to cows. Since I had no bed nor a mattress and I was sleeping on the floor, I saw it better to spend KES 11200.00 to buy a nice modern bed and a mattress. I also used KES 1200.00 to buy and fix a door to my house which has been without a door for a while. I have desired to have my piece of land where in the future I will make a home, therefore I used KES 10000.00 to start as a deposit to a piece of land that I am aiming to purchase. Thereafter, I paid KES 4000.00 school fees for my children so that they be retained in school for better learning. The remaining amount, I used in buying food for my family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I was married but unfortunately things started going left when my husband began to mistreat me. Sometimes we fought very badly and worst of all it was happening in front of my children. I could not bare with that situation and that's why came to my mother just to start another life. Here my mother is now old, she can only take care of herself. I came here with two children who were young out of the five children I have. I had started a small business of selling palm wine but due to lack of stable capital the business collapsed. If I get this money from GiveDirectly, I intend to open a food kiosk where I will be selling fast-food. This will help me in raising my children and also taking care of myself.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I have been seeking shelter from my aunt over the last two years since I came back to my mother until this January when I managed to put up a one room house mud walled. This has gave me peace ever since because my children can now have a place to sleep.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Am here at my paternal home with my two children after I separated from my husband. Things have never been easy ever since because I have no job and my children have to eat every day. My children are still very young and imagine sometimes they go to bed without eating anything. It's a very painful experience for them and more stressful to me as a mother.
