How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the future, if I get some money, I plan to build some pillars in my house to make it firmer. By so doing, it will be capable of sustaining speedy wind as well as flowing water if it rains because the terrain of the home compound is not flat thus water flows during the rainy seasons.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly is an organization that should be emulated by other organizations which want to have an impact on the community. Besides the good things that my community members did through GiveDirecly, it enabled me to set up a nice house which I could not have done any time soon due to poverty. I am very grateful for the organization because I have a secure house because of it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
By the time I received the second transfer, I had already planned on building a new spacious house because the one I had was very small and on the verge of collapsing. Therefore, I constructed a two-room mud-walled house with an iron sheet roof. I can't tell you how much it cost because my helper was in charge and due to illiteracy I could not keep track records of the expenditure. Currently, I am a happy woman sleeping in a nice secure house. The fear I had due to the state of the initial house is no longer there, courtesy of GiveDirectly. After that, I bought a goat to mark the presence of GiveDirectly at my home. Fortunately, the goat gave birth which is a sign of multiplication and soon I will have several goats. used the remaining amount For the remaining amount I opted to buy some food. Hunger was a challenging factor since we have been without rain for the last three farming seasons.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was exactly 8 in the morning when I was heading to the dam with my colleagues when I heard my phone vibrating very loudly. I never had a chance to go to school and I had to ask my daughter-in-law to check who it was. After checking, she realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. I was overwhelmed with happiness and remember making returning home and sharing the good news with my other family members. It was a celebration moment for us and thanking God for remembering us at the time we needed the help the most.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The fact that I was able to renovate my house has brought a positive impact on my life. Initially, it used to be temporary and would even collapse at any time. Besides, during the winter seasons, I used to face a lot of challenges and sometimes was forced to seek shelter at my neighbor's houses. It has been an embarrassing moment all along because at my age I did not deserve to experience that kinda trouble. Being a widow and jobless, I was so hopeless in life because I only depended on my son for the daily meals. It would take so many years for me to renovate the house because of the financial hardships. I am happy and thankful to GiveDirectly for coming into my house and for choosing my household to be among the beneficiaries.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of the first transfer on buying building materials such as bricks, sand, cement, and gravel KES 30000. This was for the renovation of my house because it was a temporary one with muddy walls which had holes all over. During the rainy seasons, it was hectic because I had to seek shelter elsewhere. In addition to that I bought building poles, and iron sheets which were for the construction of a pit latrine, the initial one was almost collapsing and I was so worried about our health because none of my neighbors had one and we would be forced to go to the bush and being infected with waterborne diseases. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for my family and settled all the debts.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My right eye was pricked by a piece of wood when I was fetching foreword back in the year 2013. I was supposed to undergo surgery as I can not see clearly but I was not able to raise the required money. This is because my family is going through tough financial time at the moment. I am planning to spend all my transfers on medication.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The support and care I am receiving from my family are unmatched. This has been my source of happiness despite the pain and discomfort caused by my health condition.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I have been able to care(cooking and fetching water) for myself since that horrible incident. Doctors told me not do any hard chore. I do feel that I am a burden to my daughter-in-law a a I entirely depend on her for self care.
