How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
All I would want to do is continue to expand my family. I fully understand how my business's current growth will lead to a brighter future for all of us. I am striving to ensure I can get to the point where I am making enough money to support my family financially without worrying.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly excelled at creating opportunities for my husband and me. Because of GiveDirectly, I was able to purchase a sewing machine and can now supplement my husband's efforts. He was the sole breadwinner, and now I can help him with things. Our feelings of pride and gratitude are inexplicable. We ask that they continue to bless others while also being blessed. Thank you very much, GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
GiveDirectly transfers enabled me to expand my business. I do hem work, and the money enabled me to purchase a sewing machine. I charge $20 per item to sew for people. That could be an outfit or a top and bottom combination. My company is located at Mariani Center, and my husband owns a boda boda within the same complex. He earns between $4 and $5 per day, leaving us with little to save. The funds enabled me to further pursue my farming passion, particularly as a livestock farmer. I purchased two female goats, which now live with us on our 2-acre farm. The food we grow, maize, is primarily for human consumption and provides little to no financial benefit. The transfers are no doubt assisted us in covering expenses such as tuition fees for our two children attending Mariani School, both in Grade 1 @and PP1, for whom tuition is $5 and $12, respectively. GiveDirectly has been a tremendous blessing to me and my family, and we will never forget it.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 8 am while on my way to look for casual labor when I received a message on my phone. Upon checking, I was shocked to see a huge amount of money that had been sent to me, I scrolled down the message and remembered that we had been promised by GiveDirectly. My heart was filled with happiness and I got energized to go and search for more jobs to do so that I could add whatever I get to the amount I had received.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before GiveDirectly graced my life, my children were a laughing stock at school due to the kind of uniform they were wearing. They were torn and ragged-like and this state did not give me peace of mind. The fact that my children did not have a place to sleep was also giving me sleepless nights. Thank you to GiveDirectly. The transfer I received changed the lives of my children and we are all comfortable. I managed to buy them school uniforms and build a house for them. As of now, they are comfortable living in their own house not like before.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Being a father of 6 children in primary school, the first thing I did after withdrawing the money was to buy school uniforms for them all. This is because they had been going to school with torn uniforms because whatever I get from my daily jobs was insufficient, thus prioritizing fees and food. Thereafter, I constructed a house for them because the one I had was too small to accommodate us. This resulted in some of them sleeping at their friends’ residences; something that was not giving me peace of mind. For the remaining amount from the construction, I bought some food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
It was a drive from within which was further triggered by my sister who was making clothes by herself. She inspired me to a tailoring college after which I decided to own my tailoring business which I am currently operating. I planned to expand my business by adding materials for School uniforms since there is a primary school in the area. Buying Kitenge and lesso was also one of my plans for the business. This then will bring more returns rather than relying on making and mending clothes. I am grateful that this will soon be realised with a capital of 30,000 KES.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I was happy to let my wife join a merry go round some four months ago. At the time I was able to save at least 200 KES per day. I was able to give her 50KES every Saturday for savings in their group. I had hopes that after twelve months I will have saved like 10,000 but then things changed and everything went upside down. All is not lost, I hope that things will soon be on track. I am gratified that this programme will bring change.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial constraints is the main challenge. It has been a struggle to make ends meet. With the many systems in place, My husband has been caught countless times by the police for not having a driving licence for his motorbike. It is hard to even save for the same because my tailoring business is down and the only coin I get caters for food. He neither brings much due to fuel inflations and as already stated above,it is not enough to cater for all our needs.
