How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year and beyond, my primary goal is to witness my daughter complete her tailoring course and embark in a journey to start her own business. I see this accomplishment not only fulfilling her personal aspirations but also contributing significantly to our family's financial well-being.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is doing well is uplifting people's standard of living. What I have seen now in my life and in my village, is nothing short of unique and sustainable development. My point of view is for GiveDIrectly to continue giving cash Directly
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used my recent transfer of $550 wisely, I decided to bring positive change to my family's life. I invested in essential items, I bought two beds and two mattresses which have provided the much needed comfort as my four kids had previously slept on the floor. Additionally, I fulfilled a long time dream by purchasing a cow and two goats. I was also able to address the educational needs, covering school fees for three of my children and enabling my eldest to purse a tailoring course with the purchase of a sewing machine. This has significantly improved their performance considering that they were previously turned away from school due to unpaid school fees. I also ensured there is enough food for the family. Previously, I relied on burning charcoal despite being allergic to dust. This life changing transfer enabled me to have a more sustainable and improved livelihood.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As I was busy washing my children's clothes one afternoon around 3 p.m., a message tone from my phone suddenly caught my attention. I quickly checked my phone and saw an envelope-like icon on the screen. With a mix of excitement and curiosity, I opened the message to find a confirmation that the first promised transfer of $550 had been deposited into my account. Overwhelmed by emotions, I couldn't contain my joy and burst into ululations of happiness. I immediately began singing a heartfelt thanksgiving song, my voice echoing with gratitude. With this money, I knew I could finally fulfill my dream of paying for my daughter's college fees, a goal I had been striving towards for so long.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Before receiving the transfer, I used to struggle to make ends meet since I am a single mother. My children who are still young solely depend on me for their upkeep. This made me venture into some tiring businesses to support the situation. I started making and selling charcoal as well as selling firewood. As of now, I am grateful for the support that I received from GiveDirectly because I was able to take my daughter to a tailoring college as well as buy her sewing machine; an investment that will carry the family once she completes the course.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Getting that cash transfer from GiveDirectly was like a dream come true for me and my family. With $150, I enrolled my daughter into a tailoring college that she had always dreamt of attending. Seeing her passion for sewing, I decided to invest an additional $200 in buying her a sewing machine. I believe that once she completes her studies, she can start her own tailoring business and create a better future for herself. One thing that had bothered me for a long time was the uncomfortable sleeping situation. Sleeping on torn mats was a daily struggle. Thankfully, with $62, I was able to purchase a comfortable mattress. The feeling of sleeping peacefully at night has brought me so much joy and relief. It's amazing how something as simple as a mattress can make such a big difference in my life. The remaining amount of the cash transfer was used to support our family's basic needs, and I'm grateful that we can now live with a little more security and comfort. Seeing my daughter chase her dreams while also improving our living conditions has filled my heart with immense happiness and gratitude toward GiveDirectly.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
Improving the status of our life is basically what receiving this money means to me. At the moment, I feel the burden has become so tough on me and I want to find best ways of managing it. To start with, I intend to boost my daughter by taking her to a dress making college where she will get basic skills and establish a reliable source of income to my household. Upon completion of the course, I will buy a new brand sewing machine to start her own business that we can rely on as a family. My estimation cost for this plan is around $400 of my money. In addition, I will start livestock keeping, a venture that is doing well in our area. I will spend $120 to buy 4 goats to start this project which I believe will multiply after a short period. On the other hand, I will spend the remaining amount to cater for my hospital bill, buying beddings, paying school fees for my other 3 children and food. What a new beginning!
What is the happiest part of your day?
The support I get from my daughter is tremendous despite the nature of her source of income. My house which I live in is just braving the strong wind because it's almost collapsing and I supported it with some logs. This situation was terrifying me a lot and I could not get enough sleep with my children. Fortunately, my daughter who is a house help and she earns $40 per month surprised me. In January, she tasked some people to construct a new 2-roomed house for us. This was something I never expected because I always looked down at her job. The house is now roofed pending fixing of the door. Whenever I look at my new house, I feel so happy as a mother. Hence, I consider this as what has brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Separation from a husband means becoming your own breadwinner for the family. This is the situation I found myself after my husband failed to pay my dowry. Almost a decade now, I returned to my paternal home together with my 4 children where I established a new beginning. Taking care of my children singlehandedly has posed a big challenge to me and their education is what has been affected the most. Because they are frequently sent home due to lack of school fees, their performances has reduced and the first born failed terribly in her final exam. As a mother, I feel the pain of watching them desperately at home. In addition, I was diagnosed with ammonia 5 years ago, a condition that has left me stranded since I not have money to attend the clinics scheduled for me. This has made me so weak because, I am still engaged in strenuous activities like charcoal work despite my health status. Hence, financial instability stands out to be my biggest challenge.
