How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next one year and beyond, my goal is to build a better house. We are currently living in a simple mud walled house that is not comfortable enough for us as a family. Building a timber walled house is on top of my priority list and I look forward towards accomplishing this. This shall even be more clearer to me since I am done paying school fees for my children who had taken a huge part of my time as I had to fully concentrate on them. I will therefore start saving and diverting all my resources and energies towards constructing a new house going forward. I will also use some of the money that I get from my poultry keeping and egg selling business as a drive towards achieving this.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does so well by giving support in form of cash. Looking at the things that I was able to do on my own makes me so happy and contented as well. From the Television set that I was able to buy to clearance of school fees for my children makes me and my family extremely happy. Such investments would not have been made possible had it been that we were not given the freedom to choose how to spend the transfer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my first transfer, I used $170 to buy a television set and used another $150 to pay school fees for my child. I then ised the remaining amount of approximately $200 to buy food, clothes, mattress and other needs for my family. I had always wanted to buy a TV set but due to the little income that I make from my poultry keeping business and the school fees that we have been paying for our last born child, we were not able to do this. When I received my most recent transfer then I decided to buy one that will then enable me and my family to enjoy and have a good time and be informed on what is happening in the outside world. I feel so much happy for the amount of joy that this transfer has brought to my family over this recent past. I look forward to achieving much more now that one of my children is done with their education.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
That day, I left the phone charging and went to weed sukuma wiki in my garden. Upon my return, at around 5 pm and on checking my phone I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was very happy and was grateful to GiveDirectly and God for such a gift.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily since I received the transfers is the purchase of a dairy cow. This ensures an adequate milk supply to feed my family. In addition, the transfers have enabled my family to buy enough food that can sustain us for the next two months.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am an egg, tomatoes, and firewood vendor for over ten years now. The income from these ventures is usually invested in merry-go-round contributions which have helped pay school fees over the years. As we speak my last child is in college. When the transfers arrived we agreed with my husband and bought a dairy cow at KES 40,000 which is now the main source of milk. This is because our only cow has been on its dry spell for the last four months and was forced to buy milk. But with GiveDirectly transfers, there are no more milk expenses since I bought the second cow. Secondly, I spent KES 5,000 on payment of the examination fees for my daughter in college. Thirdly, I spent KES 5,000 on a bag of maize for my family which can sustain us for the next two months. My household budget was KES 150 but this has now been reduced. The rest I have saved for food and household expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improved housing. I live in mud wall house and to get mud for constant repair has been a challenge since there is specific kind of mud to be used. 50kg of this mud is sold KES 500 and to get money to purchase it is a challenge. I have become old and no long has the energy to repair the house and I am worried that it might collapse one day if not repaired on time. So when I receive this transfer I will spend KES 70000 to construct a semi permanent house. This will relieve me of the worries of doing repair on my old house.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I participate in village table banking group and one month ago the group was dissolved and I was given my savings KES 10000 which I intend to use to pay part of school fees for my orphaned nephew. This has brought joy and happiness into my life as it will relieve me of the total amount required.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest challenge is financial constraints. I have a orphan whom I am supporting and getting money to pay for his school fees is a challenge. I do small business of vending tomatoes within the village however the income is not sufficient to meet all our needs. He is yet to resume his study after long holiday and am worried where I am going to get the money to send him back to school.
