How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the coming year and beyond, I hope to venture into cash-crop farming growing peas and beans in my firm for sale. This is because they mature faster and require little rain compared to maize. Additionally, I intend to boost my dairy farming by doing artificial insemination of my two more dairy cows. This will increase the milk production from the current 20 litres to 50 litres per day earning me more income to support our family's needs and save money on other development goals.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Givedirectly did well in targeting the poor household in society directly with any intermediary. This reduces fraud and loss of money to the wrong persons who do not deserve the help. I feel they should incorporate financial training in their processes. This is for the potential beneficiaries on how to spend the cash aid wisely to better their lives before leaving them to make their individual decision.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a bigger part of my transfer completing the construction of a toilet which we had started with the first. This is because we were using an old mud-walled toilet which was collapsing posing a great risk to the family members. I was always worried our kids would fall into the pit while using it. Additionally, I purchased one dairy cow with my first transfer and I spent $70 to do artificial insemination. Having done that, I am positive that it will give birth in the coming two months and start vending milk to earn income. Lastly, I used $ 75 to purchase proper bedding for my mother whom we are staying together since she was using old and worn-out bedding which was uncomfortable.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was busy working at my cybercafe shop when I heard the news that people had received the transfer from my clients. I can recall well it was around 8 am when the news spread in our village. Since we were enrolled at the same time, I had to confirm my account balance to see if I had received it too. I was so happy and thanked God for the opportunity when I saw the money in my account. I started planning on how to withdraw it since we had no coins in our pockets.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am currently enjoying that I have enough water for the family after constructing gutter systems around my house. I no longer have to walk 3 kilometers every day to look for water. Furthermore, I was able to construct a modern toilet at home and our sanitation has improved something that makes our lives better.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 37,000 to purchase building stones, 10 tonnes of gravel, 20 bags of cement, and paid labour costs. This was for the construction of a modern toilet since the one I had earlier had collapsed and posed a great risk for our lives as uses. I had desired to construct a new one but I lacked the financial capacity. Furthermore, I used KES 7000 to clear the fee arrears of my kid who is in form 3. Lastly, I spent the remaining amount to acquire gutters system for the collection of rainwater for my family's consumption as well as give water to the animals.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means improving my living standard. I have a family of 7 members. We have been using a pit latrine for the past ten years. Last year 2021 in December, it was washed away during the short rains season. Since then, my family has been using forest as their toilet. It is not hygienic at all. I will use KES 50000 to build a modern toilet. I will also use KES 70000 to dig a water pan. The water collected will help me do irrigation and also have enough water for my cows.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My wife got an opportunity to go for farming training at Kilifi in February 2022. After the training she was given a 5000 litres water tank. It will help us collect water from gutters during the rain season. This will cut our cost of buying water for the animals.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a farmer and I do keep cows. I have five hybrid cows and they use 20 plastics of water per day. A plastic goes at KES 20. It has been a challenge getting money every day because of the drought. I used to sell milk and get daily income but now I do not do so. Drought is the challenge I am currently facing.
