How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Raising all nine children has been a great challenge, especially ensuring that they are in school throughout the term. The transfers I received were instrumental in clearing the arrears in their school fees and also paying part of the current term's fees. Even though providing for them is sometimes overwhelming, I trust God will always give me sufficient grace to work tirelessly on my farm and provide for their needs. At the moment I don't have any new goal but to ensure that I keep working hard to pay the school fees in time.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
The monetary support I received from GiveDirectly was the best thing to have happened in my life. Without the money, my children would have dropped out of school since I could not raise enough money to clear their tuition fees on time. Even though the money could not change everything I needed, I still feel that this was a great thought by GiveDirectly, which should be emulated by any other organization while aiding people. They should maintain the approach in all other businesses since it gave every household a chance to receive and transformed their families with the choices they made.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I was married as a second wife to an aged man who was not able to provide both for the elder wife and my house at the same time. Our marriage has blessed us with nine children with a challenge to provide for them. I am glad that God has been on my side and at the moment I have one in University, four in secondary school, and the other four in primary school. On receiving the second transfer, I spent KES 8000 on clearing the tuition arrears for the two in secondary school, bought some pairs of clothes worth KES 5000 for each of them, and new beds and bedding at KES 15000 after disposing of the old mats they had been sleeping on. I spent the remaining amount on foodstuff and other household goods that were missing then. Previously, I was running a maize-selling business that used to earn my family a good income, but the pressure to clear the school fees took all the proceeds, leaving me with no capital.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was busy smearing my mud-walled house at around 6 pm that day. That's when I heard a message alert on my phone inside my pocket. A few minutes later, after finishing my work, is when I checked, and behold I had received KES 55,000 from GiveDirectly. I was very happy knowing that my dream of acquiring an additional piece of land had come to a realization.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the GiveDirectly money is the purchase of an additional eight pieces of land. This will ensure the availability of enough grazing land for my livestock. This is because the land is just next to my half-acre grazing field. Secondly, I am also grateful because the transfers enabled me clear school fees arrears for my kids. This was my main nightmare given that my kids are top performers and therefore deserved the best education but couldn't afford it.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
About three years ago, the 15 acres that my late husband left after succumbing to kidney failure were subdivided by my co-wife and her kids. Out of the fifteen, I was only given three and a half acres of land. I saw this as outrageous because I have nine kids depending on me. However, I decided to hold my peace because after all, my father had married me off at a tender age. To a very old and wealthy old man even a few years older than him with over 60 years gap between us. Luckily, recently when GiveDirectly transfers came I saw this as an answer to my prayers. I, therefore, used KES 30,000 on the purchase of an eight-piece of land. This will guarantee the availability of enough grazing land for my livestock. Similarly, I spent KES 12,000 on clearance of school fees arrears for my daughter who just cleared high school. In addition, KES 5,000 was also used on the clearance of fees for my kids in lower primary. Consequently, I spent KES 6,800 on a chain-link fence to secure my grazing land because it was unsecured. Further, I spent KES 3,300 on a bag of maize of which the remaining half will sustain us for the next two weeks. Moreover, I utilized KES 8,000 on the purchase of the latest clothing fashion which can be worn to church and special events. The remainder of KES 5,000 I have saved towards buying a goat. This is because they multiply fast, are economical, and can later be sold for school fees.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a better education for my children. I am a single parent depending on livestock keeping as my source of livelihood to raise a family of 9. I have two children in secondary and 5 others in primary school. Raising their school fees single handedly is a challenge to me. They are always sent home to collect the arrears and this affects their performance because they miss out class sessions for several days in a term. I am planning to use KES 50,000 to clear the current arrears and also pay for next academic year. The rest of the amount I will use to purchase a dairy cow so as to increase my income in future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Due to good weather condition I harvested two bags of beans in the last six months that helped me pay part of school fees for my two children in secondary level. This brought me happiness because it reduced the arrears I had by KES 9,000.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Raising school fees for my two children in secondary school is the challenge that I am facing currently. I still need to pay KES 30,000 arrears for the previous and this term. I used to own a small cerials bussiness but I used all the proceeds to pay their school fees and the business collapsed. I have been selling my cows to raise the money which directly reduces the income I get. This stresses me out.
