How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I wish to raise enough money and invest in long long-term businesses so that I can be able to send my four children to school. My spouse went passed on almost ten years ago and I have been raising my four children singlehandedly. The charcoal business that I rely on, has never been that lucrative. My dream is however to see all my children get a better education for the sake of their tomorrow. Therefore I am hoping that God will see me through as I plan to accomplish this dream.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the organisation was well organised and this is evident from his the officers handled from the first day they visited our village. They treated everyone equally with respect regardless of age, tribe or even religion. Also after fulfilling their promise, they made sure that they followed up to confirm whether the money was well received by the intended beneficiary. This made us feel loved and cared for by the organisation. I, therefore, do not see anything that they need to change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying some pieces of iron sheets which cost around $196. This was for the completion of the two houses; which were for my sons and mine. Building new houses had to be a priority because our previous house had collapsed a few months ago and I was forced to construct a temporary hut. My family and I have however been living in fear because of the wild animals that were all over the village. We weren't safe at all leave alone the harsh climatic conditions. To add to that, there was no privacy at all. As a widow, I have been fighting so had to make sure that I raise enough cash to put up a new house but in vain. I had lots of responsibilities to cater to. I now feel relieved because financial support has empowered me enough to own two houses which is like a gift to me that I will never it for granted. Also, I cleared fees of $110 for my son in secondary school and I am so glad that he will finally graduate next year. Additionally, I settled a debt of $50 to a friend which has made me peace of mind. With the remaining cash, I bought sufficient food for my five children.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
At around 8 pm when I was in the kitchen cooking an evening meal. A neighbor with who we were registered on the same day came to let me know that she had received her transfer. Therefore, alerting me to check whether I had received mine too. I told my son to check and luckily I was also in the consideration of GiveDirectly. I was the happiest woman of the evening, I ululated in happiness and left the cooking aside after being informed that KES 55000.00 had been deposited into my account.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
From a congested house to a spacious house is a bigger difference in my life. I am very grateful for the transfer that I received from GiveDirectly. It enabled me to construct a spacious house since my family and I used to squeeze ourselves into a small house hence the right to personal life and privacy was being breached. I am happy that GiveDirectly enabled me to move out of this situation and we are now living comfortably as a family.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I withdrew the money, I opted to construct a spacious house. This is because the one I had was very small and congested. It could not comfortably accommodate my family of six and the items we owned. Thereafter, I bought 22 iron sheets for KES 17600.00, 80 poles for KES 4000.00, and 400 rafters for KES 2000.00. For the labor charge, the contractor took KES 10000.00. I also paid KES 2000.00 school fees for my three primary school children because they were ever sent home for fees and examination money. As of now, they are well settled in school. Thereafter, I saw it prudent to save the remaining amount for the family's upkeep.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I think of this money and I see my five children and I living in a two-roomed house, they have their separate room and I have my own. My husband passed on a couple of years back after he married me as his sixth wife. All I have as his inheritance are palm wine tress which I have to look for workers to tap the wine and the proceedings I buy food or pay school fees for the three children in school. As a result, I have not been able to set aside some amount to help me build a house. I do not like the state of the house. The grass-thatched roof is worn out and I am worried that the house may be blown away by a strong wind. I will be so proud of myself once I complete this project, which I think may cost me about 30,000 KES. The remaining out I will use to buy food for my family and pay school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Flu infections in children are my worst enemy because I then have to go borrow money from people to take them to the hospital and as a parent, it is no walk in the park. Every day I wake up and they are healthy it is a cause to be joyful.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Access to water is a headache, every morning before the sun comes up I have to go to the stream to fetch water and in the evening I make another trip. It is tiresome and overwhelming. I wish we had a borehole nearby to ease this load.
