How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
.I do not have any new goals at the moment. I still want to complete the construction of my 4 roomed mud-walled house that I had started with the transfers. Currently, I was able to renovate 2 rooms by replacing the mud walls with stone walls that are more durable and do not require frequent repair which is very costly. Completing the construction will restore the happiness that I had lost for so many years sleeping under a leaking roof.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, giving out cash transfers to the poor households in our village is what Givedirectly did well. Additionally sending the cash directly to eligible households through mobile money was a good decision they made. Through the transfer, the lives of many people in our community were transformed for the better. I just wish it expands its operations to reach other households living in poverty.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my recent transfer to renovate our old, mud-walled house which was leaking due to the rusty iron rooftop. During the rainy season, we were forced to spend a sleepless night with my 70-year-old husband something that was miserable. I had desired to renovate my house but I lacked the finances since we are unemployed and no longer economically active. I used most of the transfer to purchase building stones and replaced the leaking iron roof by putting up a new one. Currently, I am happy to renovate part of it and no longer have to suffer during the rainy seasons unlike before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was with my grandchild at home, we were about to go to the water pan to collect water for the family. I remember it was around 8 am when I received the message notification on my phone. My grandson confirmed the message and informed me that I had received the transfer from GiveDirectly. I was very happy for receiving my transfer which mark the beginning of a better living standard since I had planned to spend it wisely.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to acquire a solar lighting system for my house. I am no longer staying in the dark like previously when I had to use a small lamp that could not provide enough light. In addition, I can comfortably charge my phone whenever I like without having to walk to the neighbors for assistance. Nowadays. I can also meet most of my small basic needs like food without much effort.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been staying in the dark for a very long time since the small paraffin lamp that I had could not provide enough light to fully lit my house. After receiving my transfer, I spent KES 12,000 to purchase a 50w solar light system for the house. This was to provide enough light for the house as well as charge my phone. In addition, I bought a bag of maize for KES 4500 since we did not have enough food for the family. Moreover, I spent KES 10,400 to construct a pit latrine for my family because we were using the bush which was not safe, especially at night. Besides, it was destroying the environment. Lastly, I spent KES 17,000 to purchase 10 tonnes of buildings stones which I intended to renovate my house by putting up pillars and floor so that it is more stable.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I do farming for both subsistence and commercial use depending on the harvests. My agricultural land is 4 acres. I normally hire oxen services for plowing. This costs me around 2500KES per acre. I will use my transfers to buy four oxen at 15000 KES each. The plow cost around 9000 KES. I also do business of buying and selling livestock during the dry season. I earn a profit of around 500 KES for every goat sold. I am also planning to buy 10 goats at 3000 KES which will boost my business.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My son who was working in an Indian shop was accused of stealing and to my surprise, he was charged with committing robbery with violence. He was sentenced to life imprisonment but lucky enough, he was pardoned and released from jail. This made me happy because I was able to reunite with my son after staying apart for ten years.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I incurred a lot of losses this year from my farming business. I lost all my crops owing to the drought we are experiencing at the moment. I had plowed three and a half acres of land only for the maize crop to succumb to drought. The livestock business is also not doing fine. Prices at the market are too low and we end up making losses instead of profits. This has made life difficult on our side as but economic time has flexed its muscles on us. We hardly afford three meals a day at sometimes we can go without any.
