How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have not developed any goal since I am still looking on expanding a livestock investment which I started and as of now, I have some livestock. Once I make it stable and reliable I will come up with another challenging goal that will make me think outside the box as I expand my income-generating activities.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly did perfectly well. It was well organized and did its work in a well-structured manner. The only place that I think it should improve is in the registration process. Although we were informed that only people who mostly stay in that village are the ones eligible but my plea is you register every adult member of the household. Even if they are at their places of work they should be called. By so doing you will minimize envy within homes where some received while others did not receive because they were at their places of work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Since my house was leaking as well as congested because it was small, I did some renovations. I bought poles and roofing timbers for KES 4200.00, and six iron sheets for KES 5700.00. The contractor took KES 11000.00 as his labor charge. Having settled the housing issue which was not giving me peace of mind, I paid KES 3800.00 for my three children who were sent home for fees. I also bought a cow for KES 12500.00 and two goats for KES 8000.00. This livestock is an investment that will at any time stand in to cater for my children's school fees if the need arises. Thereafter, since I used to sleep on a traditional bed which was not comfortable, I opted to buy a nice modern bed and a mattress for KES 11000.00. Currently, I sleep well in a nice and comfortable place unlike before. For the remaining amount, I bought food for my family.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Most of my neighbors celebrated having received their first transfer except a few, I included. When I received a text message early in the morning I did not hesitate to check it because I was eagerly waiting for my turn and to my surprise, it was a confirmation message that I had received a cash transfer. At that moment I knew that all my financial challenges were met.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since we received the first transfer, there has been a huge financial relief in our household. I was able to clear my child's school fees arrears which the elephant in the house. We are now able to save the little money we earn from our casual work for future use because we currently have enough food stock too. I am also hoping to stop budgeting for milk once the cow I bought gives birth. This is the biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the payments from Give Directly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I invested part of the first transfer on a cow with a projection of not only benefiting from milk both the household use and sale but of selling them out in the future to enable me to sort school fees for my children. With KES 23000 KES, I was able to obtain a cow for rearing. I also bought enough foodstuff for my family of seven that included rice, beans, and dry maize grains at 6500 KES that we shall use for quite a long time. 10000 KES I spent on both a bed and two mattresses for my household so that we could do away with the mats and torn mattress that we had. I am glad we no longer experience the back and ribs pain that resulted from the poor sleeping conditions. With the remaining amount, I spent KES 5000 on my child's primary school fees so that I could clear the huge arrears he owed the school and saved 10000 KES that I will use to purchase iron sheets for replacing my roof which is currently leaking.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means getting my own piece of land. The place I currently stay is a family land where my husband was given his share. The space is small such that we can not cultivate during rainy season. Therefore, I have identified a place where I can get like one acre which will cost us 30000KES. With this I will be very sure to produce enough food for myself and even be able to sell the surplus.
What is the happiest part of your day?
There was a time last year when I had reached my limit of getting something to eat for my family. I had reached out to almost all my relatives and neighbors but there was this cousin of mine who works in Kilifi I had not called. He was my last resort when am in any trouble. I sent him a please call me message and when immediately he called. Upon explaining the situation, there and there he sent me 1000KES. I can say I cried that moment because of the joy I had. I can't forget that day in my life.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Food insecurity is the hard experience am going through right now. Because of my small piece of land here, that's already limit us from producing enough food if at all the rains will be good. But because of the prolonged drought we have seen in this area, it has become very hard to produce anything because all the crops died in the farm. This situation has caused us not getting three meals a day like what we used to.
