How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The new goal that emerged recently is to raise enough money so that I can purchase barbed wire to fence my house. I have been experiencing loss and damage from the wild animals once they invade my farm. I, therefore,e, believe by fencing it, my farm products will be safe hence reducing the rate of famine in my household.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by ensuring that all the beneficiaries get proper teaching on how to handle Mpesa services. This has been of help because some of us were not conversant with the phones and the Mpesa. Therefore this has helped us in such a way that we were able to secure our cash transfers appropriately. I, therefore, do not see anything that the organisation did wrong.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying bags of cement, sand and all the labour charges which cost around KES 25000. I had intended to renovate my house which was semi-permanent and one of its walls was almost collapsing. I was always worried about our safety, especially during the rainy season. During the rainy periods, we have therefore been seeking shelter together with my three family members. I am currently a happy parent for finally being able to renovate my house. I no longer have to move around seeking shelter also I feel this has restored my dignity. With the remaining amount of money, I have been buying food for the family and other household items.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
Felt very happy. since I never thought I will receive such a huge amount of money for free. During the enrollment period, I budgeted for the money so the moment I received the money I already knew how to spend.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Water was big challenge, I was facing since our area is semi-arid and most of the time we experience prolonged droughts but as we speak the water problem has been solved. I am as well leaving a comfortable life since I'm now leaving in my new semi-permanent house with adequate water flow. From the water I sell I have employed myself and I'm getting daily income to cater for my needs which I previously never heard all these changes have been brought to my life by give directly transfer I received. recently.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My semi-permanent house was under construction. So the moment I received the transfer I used the money to complete the house which could have taken me more than six months to complete. I also used the money to supply water from my neighbor to my newly completed house the thing I never thought it will happen, I just got this noble idea the moment I received the money from give directly I also went ahead and bought a 3000 thousand liters tank. Now I'm selling water to my neighbours at affordable prices.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I am a Poultry farmer keeping hybrid birds. I have 90 chicks and my target was to have 300. Receiving this money means expanding my poultry farming business. I am planning to use the transfers to buy more chicks, chicken feed and construct a spacious chicken coop which will cost approximately KES 80,000. I will be able to sell eggs for KES 350 per tray. The produce will help me to have a regular income that is sustainable for my daily household needs. Hence live a decent life as a widower.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the month of January, my daughter who works in South Arabia landed back in Kenya safely after residing in a foreign land for two years. This made me glad and we made a small celebration as a family to welcome her back home.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial struggles have really weighed me down. This has been made worse by the type of livelihood that I depend on. I am casual laborer and my earns are as little as 3000 KES per month. This amount is not enough to cater for all my needs. I have 3 children and mother to feed and clothe.
