How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am planning to focus on beans farming because the planting season is due and can be sold for maize meal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well to change the living standards of people in my locality. For example, through the transfers, I now have a dairy cow and comfortable sofa seats which I couldn't otherwise afford.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the second transfer, I spent KES 25,000 on building a house for my teenage son. This is because he just underwent circumcision which is a rite of passage from childhood to adulthood in our community. As a result, one is required to have his own house. Secondly, I have worked as a vegetable vendor for the past ten years. I normally specialize in the sale of cabbages, tomatoes, onions, indigenous vegetables, and, Omena. This has been a major source of food and school fees for my family. Over the years, I have been working with a stock of KES 5,000 and I have been making profits of up to KES 1500 on a good day. But when GiveDirectly transfers came I used KES 10,000 on the addition of the vegetable stock and as we speak I make a profit of up to KES 3,000 a day. In addition, I spent KES 15,000 on completing the veranda and ceiling both for my house and my son's house as well. Furthermore, I spent KES 8,000 on four sofa sets. This is because I used to have only three plastic chairs and would borrow them whenever I had many visitors. But with GiveDirectly transfers, I can now accommodate my family and visitors comfortably. Lastly, KES 5,000 was spent on a bag of maize and other household items. This is because from my business I could not afford to buy food in bulk but GiveDirectly has made it possible.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
The transfer came at an expected hour, after a very long day of struggling to make ends meet, we retired to bed early that day because we were all exhausted, at around 11 pm I heard my phone ringing, I was hesitant in checking who had texted me that time of the night, but since I was awake already I decided to check on where the text came from, that was when I saw a Mpesa message showing that I had received money from GiveDirectly, I was happy and excited because I knew that I will be able to put the money in good use.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to buy my cow, thus I am hopeful that I would have a milk surplus in the future, I was unable to buy a cow before due to financial constraints, this is because my husband and I are casual labourers, with the current economic status everything is expensive in the market, therefore whatever we earned was only enough to feed the family. My heart is overjoyed that we were able to realize our dream, my husband is also thankful for the great milestone that we have achieved in a short period.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My prayer and wish were for me to own a dairy cow, this dream was not possible due to financial constraints, my husband and I are casual labourers, thus our source of income is not enough to cater for our daily expenses. when I received my transfer my key priority was for me to purchase a dairy cow, therefore I used KES 30,000, I then bought sofa sets worth KES 10,000, in addition to that, I used KES 500 in adding more stock to my business and finally, I bought foodstuffs with the remaining amount.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Our main economic activity is livestock keeping and crop farming.Due to the adverse effects of drought , pest and diseases crop production has been very poor.Livestock rearing has therefore become more beneficial as compared to crop production. With these transfers, I will purchase two dairy cows worth KES 35000 each. This is because with them I will have a constant supply of milk within my household and this will mean that my family is food secure. In addition, I will be able to supply milk to a nearby cooling plant approximately ten litres at a cost of KES 35 per litre. This will enhance my financial stability because I will be able to earn KES 10500 per month.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My ability to purchase a motorbike has brought me happiness in the past year. I was able to buy a motorbike from the sale of the 4 heifers worth KES 20000 which I bought at my tender age. This has served as a source of livelihood to my family because I have been able to feed, clothe and educate my children from the daily income of KES 400.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Scarcity of food and drought is the biggest challenge am currently facing. Hunger has greatly affected my family in the past 5 years, this is because the staple food which is maize has been affected by pests and diseases hence resulting in poor yields. The main economic activity in this area is crop production and livestock farming and due to the poor effects of drought the crops and livestock have been unproductive. There are some days in a week when my family has had to live on one meal a day and on many occasions two meals a day because of lack of finances to buy food .The nutritional conditions of my children has deteriorated due to lack of a balanced diet.As a result, I have accrued a large debt in some of the shops in the nearby town due to the acquisition of foodstuff on credit.
