How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have made a little financial step from where I was before I was enrolled in the project because I can now earn a consistent amount from my business each day. I previously worked as a water supplier which mostly depended on orders that were far between. I could not make enough money to pay for the hired cart that I used and take care of my other needs from this job making life quite difficult. Whatever little I earn now is much more than what I made before and that is why I have managed to make some savings, which was completely impossible before.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
If the transfers were to end today, I would not be in a good financial position to take care of my household needs as I had hoped would be after receiving the transfers for a year. The shoe business that I started using the transfers is not doing so well and is still not able to provide for all my needs, and with only a few months left to the end of the project, I have to do better and improve the project. My goal is to improve the business by adding more stock and renting a stall to operate the business which I am currently hawking due to lack of money to rent a stall. Hawking is tiresome and limiting because I can only carry a small amount of my stock. It is also very unreliable because whenever a customer wants something, they are not really sure where to find me, which is the main reason I need to have a stall.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used part of the money I recently received to pay my rent for the month then spent the rest on foodstuff and other household requirements. I have a business that I started using the transfers but it is not yet stable enough to take care of my household needs which I why I still have to rely on the transfers for most of my expenses.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference in my life is the business which I started with part of my transfers. I used to depend on a small income from odd jobs in my area because I had tried looking for employment but could not get. I had to settle for what I had until GD came to my life. I knew this was my opportunity to making my life better. This is why I chose to start a cloth business with my transfers. Right now, I feel my life is moving on well because of the transfers. I do not struggle as before. Thanks to GD I can successfully meet my family needs in time and without having to borrow or seek for help.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
My goal is to continue boosting my cloth business. I will want to make it more stable than it is now because from it I will be able to get a good income in terms of the profits. This will help me meet my needs sufficiently.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on paying my house rent. Payment time was due and that's the money I had at hand. I also bought food with part of my transfer since the little we had in the store was getting finished anytime. The rest of the transfer I used to boost the cloth business. It was not doing well and I needed to boost it to increase my income.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have managed to save enough money with the help of the transfers I have been receiving from GiveDirectly monthly and purchased a few crucial household items that I never had before. I have bought furniture such as a seat, a table and a bed which have made my house look presentable and given me the courage to have my friends visit me. I was so shy having them in my house before because I only had one stool and slept on a mattress on the floor which was quite embarrassing especially for a guy my age. Buying all the items that I have managed to buy would have been impossible because I depend on small casual and irregular jobs that mostly provide me with just enough money to take care of my daily needs and not any extra to save for such expenditure.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
One of the jobs I do at the moment is to supply water within my area of residence to people in their houses for domestic use and to business people with grocery stores and salons. This kind of job is tedious yet earns me very little money as I still have to hire a cart to ferry the water because I have not been able to buy my own. For a better life, I wish to buy my own cart so that I don't have to worry about giving out part of my daily earnings to pay for the hired cart. After that, I will make plans on setting up a new business on second-hand clothes and shoes that I can sell after the busy hours of supplying water during the morning hours. This will be an extra source of income for me and away out from the hectic construction jobs that I have to do sometimes when the water business does not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used part of the money I recently received to pay my rent to avoid any issues with my landlord who does not like it when one delays with the rent. The previous month had not been so fruitful in terms of income so, all I could do was to take care of the most crucial needs of my family with the transfer, so I used the rest of the money to cater for my electricity bill and foodstuff.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My goal is to build a house at home. I use part of my transfers to buy iron sheets and nails and I will use my next transfers to buy timber and pay the carpenter. Currently I am living in a small house and it is congested. The new house will be spacious and will accommodate all my belongings.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I have bought building materials such as iron sheets and nails. I am happy since I no longer struggle to pay rent and buy food since I use part of my transfers to cater my basic needs. I have also acquired some of the household items that I did not have before. It is my joy since I used part of transfers to buy a sofa set and I am always free to welcome visitors to my house.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I used my most recent transfer to pay rent. I have been depending on the little income from casual jobs to pay rent. At times it was a challenge to pay rent since the casual jobs are not constant. I also used part of transfer to buy a sofa set since I did not have one and at times I feel ashamed to welcome my friends to my house.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
It was eleven o'clock in the morning when I received my transfers. I was so happy since I received the money at a time when I had a debt of three thousand five hundred shillings from a friend and I knew that I will repay the money on that day.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I will use this money first to build a house in my rural home since I still doesn't have one. I will then invest in business of clothes and shoes selling since I believe this will bring me good income. I will then after use it to buy some house hold items.
Describe your biggest worry.
My main worry is always about meetingmy daily neede for example Food since my income and that of my family is very low and times we have to skip meals in order to satisfy other needs. My next worry is about housing in terms of having my own house in the rural home and being able to pay for my rent here in Nairobi too. Last but not least,is about unemployment. This is a big issue because my jobs are mostly casual and it's unpredictability as today you may earn something but tomorrow you have nothing making life difficult.
What are your greatest ambitions?
My ambition is to start up a business and ensure it grows successfully and that it gives me good returns and improve my lifestyle.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
I usually do casual jobs mainly water distribution to various households in my area that I sell to them using handcart/mkokoteni,thats where my main income comes from. While in my free time I do relax in the house or watch movies. At times I go for football games in Depo Thika Road.
