How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am planning to open a kiosk because, as a farmer, I realize that farming is seasonal, and there are times when I remain idle, waiting for the next planting season. To empower myself as a woman and have a continuous income, I need an alternative source of livelihood during these off-seasons. Although my husband and I plant separately, we both contribute to our family's needs, so this kiosk will help me add to that support. Currently, I have planted beans on an acre of land and black nightshade on half an acre, and the market for these crops is readily available. I anticipate earning about $400 from the beans and $300 from the black nightshade, which I plan to invest in starting my kiosk while continuing with my crop farming activities for a more stable income.

When I received my unconditional cash transfer, I decided to prioritize my children's education and the well-being of my family. My son is currently in junior secondary school, and I enrolled him in boarding, which cost me $105. His school recommended boarding due to the long distance and the dangers of crossing the river, especially after the recent flood incident. Additionally, I have a daughter in high school who had accumulated $200 in unpaid school fees. What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
To solve the food problem for my family of 6, I plan to allocate KES 5,000. Following flood-related losses, KES 15,000 will be used for essential household items like utensils, beddings, and clothing. Addressing the high cost of milk, I intend to invest KES 35,000 in acquiring a dairy cow. The cow will provide milk for our household and generate extra income from sales in the neighborhood. KES 10,000 will cover school fees. Another KES 6,000 will be used to purchase 2 sheep, adding to our income streams. To overcome financial barriers hindering the start of fruit farming at my home farm, KES 39,000 will be spent on fencing and purchasing mango seedlings, along with fuel for irrigation.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am delighted to see my maize crops thriving. Initially, I was concerned about how to afford fuel for irrigation. The two-month-long rains not only promoted excellent crop growth but also saved me the expense of purchasing fuel for irrigation.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I face several challenges currently. I don't have enough money to pay school fees for my four children. Recent floods damaged many household items, and I lack funds to replace them. For my maize plantation, I need money to buy fuel for pumping water from the river to the farm to ensure a good harvest. Sometimes, my family cannot afford three meals a day due to financial constraints, resulting in breakfast and dinner being our main meals.
