How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Our new goal is to expand the size of our house so that it can accommodate guests visiting our household. We have been rearing chickens and we plan to buy more once the disease outbreak that is there is over. We also bought three sheep with part of the transfer. We plan to take care of the sheep and the chickens and sell some of them in the future when they will have reproduced and multiplied in number. The money that we will make is what we will use in achieving our new goal.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly staff taught us well in the meeting that they held with the community members. They talked us well and in a polite manner as they explained what the program entailed. I however, would like to urge them to kindly reconsider enrolling two people who were left out yet they are members of the village and they are very needy. Otherwise, everything went well and I do not see anything wrong with how they conducted their work.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 20000 of our recent transfer on buying chairs and their cushions. We bought them because we didn't have them. We also spent a total of KES 9000 on buying three sheep. The sheep are an investment and they are going to help us in the future when they will have reproduced and multiplied in number. We can sell some and use the money that we get in making other developments such as expanding our house. We also bought food, seeds for planting, a solar panel and the radio, and some household items such as sugar, salt, etc with part of the transfer money. We still have some amount with us that we plan to use in buying more chickens for rearing once the disease outbreak that is there is over. The chickens have been of great help to us since we usually sell some and use the money on buying food and paying school fees for our two children at times. We are thus so much grateful because we have gotten the things that we didn't have before and hence our living standards have been uplifted.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I received the transfers is happiness because I now own a dairy cow which is not only a source of milk to my family but an income source too.I had desired to buy one for the past four years but couldn't afford because I used to work as a casual laborer.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES35000 on a dairy cow which is currently a source of milk and income to my family. This is because I had been buying milk for the past four years and that was quite costly. I also spent KES 8000 on food and clothing and KES 5000 on 20 chicks in order to be an additional income source.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Just imagine buying two liters of milk daily at KES 100 to feed my children. This costs half of our daily income which is expensive for me. I cannot avoid this now that milk stable and nutritious food for children. This gives me the necessity of buying a cow with KES 40000 to produce our milk and cut this cost. This will also boost our family income through the sale of surplus milk. I am also passionate about the grocery business but capital has been challenging to me. With this money I see my dreams coming through. I will spend KES 20000 to jump-start this enterprise which will later give us more cash flow. I will also buy food and clothing for my family to avoid perennial food shortages.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I can provide food and other family needs despite the little income I get from my casual job. This makes me happy now that I can play my role as a parent.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am struggling financially to provide for my family, I work casually on farms to earn a living. My daily earning is about KES 200 which is little and can not sustain my family's needs.
