How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The main goal that I have been yearning to accomplish was to own goats and I am glad that this was a success. I will benefit a lot especially when I encounter any emergency, I will be able to sell one or two and settle them. I however do not have any other new goal in mind for now.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the organization was one of the best in the world because of its uniqueness. The fact that I was offered the help in form of cash stood out. This is what I have been praying to have so that I could accomplish my heart's desires. I am thankful that I now own so many assets through them. I do not see any part that there is a gap in them.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my second transfer on buying ten pieces of iron sheets worthy of KES 8000 and building poles at KES 6000. This was for the additional room for my initial house since it only had one small room. This has been forcing some of my children to sleep at their friend's houses far away from the village. Also, I bought three goats at KES 11500 and I am grateful for having them. I bought the goats because they reproduce very fast which is an assurance that I will have many of them in a short period. Through them, I will be able to achieve a lot and especially when I have any financial constraints In addition, I cleared the arrears of KES 13000 for my children who are in secondary and primary school respectively. Additionally, I bought foodstuffs for my eight family members and other household items that I was lacking. I am glad that we n longer skip meals like before.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I can still recall very well at exactly 8 PM when I had retired to bed when my mobile phone started ringing so loudly. This was so unusual since I had was expecting to hear from any of my friends at that particular time of the night. Therefore since I am illiterate, I asked my spouse who was the acting helper to confirm for me who it could be. Upon reading the messages, he realized that they were from Segovia Technology, I had finally received my first transfers as promised. I felt so happy and I couldn't even afford to sleep. We started planning as a family on how to utilize the cash accordingly without wasting even a single cent. It was indeed a memorable night in our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that through the transfers, I was able to send all my six children to school. This has been a major challenge to me since I don't have a stable job that I can rely on. Therefore my spouse has been the family's breadwinner for all those years which has never been easy for him to fend for all our family's basic needs and pay school fees on time. This forced my six children to always be on and off. This has been frustrating me for so long since this matter used to demotivate them and I was afraid it would even force them to drop out of school. Since I never had a chance to go to school, my wish has always been to see all my children get a good education so that their lives can be better in future, I have however been trying to borrow loans from microfinance but I was not granted since I did not have any security. All I can say is that it sounds like a miracle that today, all my children are in school without any distractions. Had I not received the transfer, they could still be at home up to date because I had tried my best but in vain. I will always be thankful to GiveDirectly for making a positive impact on my life.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a portion of my first transfer on buying some building materials such as pieces of iron sheets at KES 10000, building poles KES 5000, and the labor charge of KES 4000. I had to purchase all these with aim of renovating my house since it was very small, I, therefore, felt it was necessary to add another room. Having a big family which is comprised of eight members, it could not accommodate us all and all my children had to my relative's place. I was always worried about their safety since our relative's houses were very far from the village. In addition, I bought a new bed and mattress at KES 11000 to replace the traditional one that I have been using for all those years. Also, I cleared school fees of KES 8000 for my six children who are all in primary schools and I am glad that they are no longer sent home regularly like before. With the remaining cash, I bought foodstuffs for my family and cater for their household expenses.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a family of eight children. Out of the eight, one finished secondary school but did not go to college, five are in primary school and two are still young. Meeting the basic needs of my family have been very difficult. We sleep in a single roomed house. We cook, eat and sleep in the same place. This is because I do not have money to build a better house that can accommodate all of us. This has been as a result of lack of reliable jobs in the village. The only means for survival is charcoal burning which earns me a profit of 2500 a month. This money is not enough to save to build a spacious house. This has forced my children to borrow shelter from the neighborhood. My ambition has been to own a two bedroom house so that my children can have a better place to sleep. Upon receiving this money, I will prioritize building a house for my children that will cost me 40000 KES. This will restore dignity to my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In the last two months, I received my pay that has accumulated for two months as a watchman in a local school . This was a happy moment for me and my family because it helped me settle all my bills and I was at peace. I also managed to buy five iron sheets and renovated my roof.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Persistent drought in our village is the main challenge that we are facing. Over the years, I have been depending on subsistence farming to put food on the table. This saved my family a lot since the little money I got from my charcoal burning was used for investment in my children education. However, this is not the case at the moment. All the money I get is solely used for food and water. This has made life to be more difficult for me and my family. Upon receiving the cash transfer, I will buy twenty goats that I will keep and sell when they multiply to educate my children. Goats do very well during dry condition so this is the next investment I intend to make with the cash transfers.
