How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My current life is totally different compared to the former life. Before, we were living in a high rate of poverty and nobody could think that there would be a day when I shall stop working on sugarcane plantation in order to get our daily bread. We had no livestock, because culturally, a Man's wealth could be evaluated in terms of the number of livestock he possess. We could not afford planting sugarcane, because the production cost was high and we owned no land as a family. Now I have managed to lease two acres of on which I have planted sugarcane.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has brought hope to the hopeless families. I, for example, after the death of my husband, I used to work on sugarcane plantation in order to get wages to buy food and other basic needs for the family. At the moment, we can afford well balanced meals without any problem. My husband died without any livestock as family's property but right now, I have two milking cows, two goats and a sheep. The milk I used in the family to improve nutrition, while the surplus I sell for income which I could spend on other things. The organization should put the proper mechanisms of seeing that the transfer is put into proper use, this is by doing proper monitoring before sending the second one. They should also incorporate the facilitation on finance management and planning during registration enrollment stage, to manage the situation where the money is being misused by some because it is perceived to be a free money.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I used my second transfer in leasing two acres of land for sugarcane farming. This I did as a way of investment for future use because I have got children who are in secondary schools and need my financial intervention in terms of fees payment. After a period of less than one and a half years, the harvesting shall be done and profit realized. I also bought two goats and a sheep. This is a means of banking in livestock and I plan to sell the animals after they shall have multiplied to pay school fees for my children in school in future, since they are still in primary school.
