How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, my new goal was to ensure my husband got the medical attention he needed. It has been close to 30 years, and his condition has been worsening every day. Because of the extreme state of poverty we are living in, we could not afford to pay for his treatment.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Through issuing of unconditional transfers, Give Directly does very well. These funds have changed my life for the better and I am happy that I have been able to accomplish most of the goals that I have had. I would like Give Directly to ensure that they check on the working conditions of the phones. The phone they issued to my friend stopped working after some few days and it forced him to buy a new phone.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my transfer completing the building of my house and those of my two sons. I built new houses and in a new location because of the challenges we have been experiencing over the years. Our houses were in a valley and during the rainy season, the water would submerge them in the still water that accumulated at the bottom. Once this happened, we would be homeless, lack food and even lose some of our property. It is for this reason that we moved to higher ground and avoid all the trouble. Besides building the houses, I spent much of the money amounting to KES 20000 to pay medical bills for my dearest husband. For close to 30 years, my husband could not work because of some chilling pains under his belly and at the back. Because of our poor financial state, he has never gotten serious medical attention and receiving this money provided a wonderful opportunity for him to get the medical attention he needed. Lastly, I spent the remaining amount in buying three 90Kg sacks of maize, 5Kgs of sugar, 3 loaves of bread, 6 Kgs of beans, Fruits and other foodstuff for my family (Husband and three children). I became the only bread winner after my husband fell ill and I have been burning woods and selling charcoal to earn a living. I earn KSH 200 per day which is not enough o feed my entire family and also take care of medical expenses for my husband. Receiving the money ensured that I bought food in bulk and ensure I had plenty to eat.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was on my way back home from my parental home where I had gone to visit my mum who was sick. I received a message alert on my phone, I continued with the journey until I reached my maternal home. Upon reaching home, I was called by my husband who had heard people had received their transfer in the neighborhood. Upon checking my phone we realized that I had received my transfer as well. I was so happy since it marks the beginning of the fulfillment of my dream of owning a decent house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to construct a decent and respectable shelter for the family. Previously, we had been living in small structures that were about to collapse. Furthermore, I was always ashamed when I am visited by guests something that make me fear visitors since I lacked their accommodation.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent most of my transfer in purchasing building materials including building poles, nails, timber, and 30 iron sheets. Previously, we were staying in a small structure which was not enough to accommodate both us and the household properties. I was very ashamed whenever I received guests because I had to seek shelter for them in my neighbours house. In addition, I bought 3 goats for KES 10,500 to boost my livelihood of livestock rearing. Lastly, I supported the educational need of the kids by clearing the fee arrears. With the remaining amount , I bought enough food for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means good health for my family. My husband has been sick for the past five years. He is suppose to have a stomach surgery but he does not have money. His sickness has made me take over the responsibility of feeding the family. This is really hard for me. I will use KES 60000 for my husband to have the operation done. I will also use KES 40000 to build a one bedroom house for my family because I am currently living in a small house. The remaining KES 10000 will be used for food.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My village has drought and famine. Last week , a private company by the name Mombasa cement brought free clean water for the community. I got 20 plastics of water which will last for three weeks. The relief water brought happiness to me.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of spacious house is the challenge I am facing. I am living in a small house which lacks privacy and it leaks during rains season. My husband sickness has contributed to the current challenge I am facing because he cannot work thus it is hard for him to get money and build a spacious house for the family.
