How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Purchasing buildings materials is what I had planned before receiving the transfer. I lived with my parents in the same house. I had always wished to build my own house and have my privacy. When I received the transfer, I purchased all the necessary materials and am now waiting to be shown where to build a house. Secondly, I had planned on repaying the debt that I had borrowed. This is to give me peace of mind to conduct my daily routine knowing that I do not have any debt.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly does well by conducting training before enrollment. Most of the people who received the transfer build better houses and pay school fees for their children. I do not find anything that GiveDirectly did not do well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES 29,000 on purchasing building materials ready to build my own house. We lived with our parents and when I received the transfer I found it worth living in a separate house for my privacy. I had always wished to do that but I did not have the money to buy the building materials. Currently, I have all the required materials waiting for the go-ahead from my parent. I spent KES 2,600 to repay the debt that I had borrowed from a friend. Then I pay 1,500 on school fees for my child who is in primary school. He is now studying well without being disturbed. I saved some amount in merry go round group that we started in our village. This helps us in case of any emergency since we can borrow the money from the group. I bought food, clothes, and household basic needs that we lacked. Finally, I saved KES 5,000 to pay the workers who will build the house for me. I am so grateful for the support because GiveDirectly has enabled us to achieve our dreams.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
That day, I had gone to a nearby river to fetch water without my phone at around 10 am.That is when I heard neighbors saying they had received their GiveDirectly transfers. On reaching home, I also checked my phone and confirmed to have received KES55000 from GiveDirectly.I was very excited and immediately went with my sister who's also a beneficiary for the money. That day it was a very great day because we ate special diet which we don't normally afford.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving the transfers is owning a heifer which will soon be an income source for my family. Currently, I rely on my late parents cows to feed my kids though most are on their dry spell. For the past five years, I had desired to own a dairy cow and had even ventured into goat rearing with intention of selling them for a cow.Through GiveDirectly transfers, I was also able to buy food in bulk unlike before when we used to buy daily in small amounts due to low or no income at times. As a result of adequate food, my kids have grown healthier and happier.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent KES27000 on a heifer to act a source of milk and as a long term investment for the future of my family. I also spent KES10000 on house construction materials in preparation to build my own house because I am single mum still living under my late parents roof.I also spent KES10000 on clothing and household items and KES 3000 on settlement of debts.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
This is a lifetime opportunity that has come for me.I am so happy since my ambition is coming to a reality.I have always wanted to own a better house but because of the inadequacy of finance it has remained a mere dream. The one I have at the moment is leaking. It is grass thatched, old and dilapidated and I cannot even harvest rainwater for domestic use. I want to build it an a sheet roofed house that will cost me approximately KES 40000. I will use the rest of the money to buy a cow.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My typical days involve household chores and tilling of my land. That is always my routine. My happiest part of the day is in the evening when I am relaxed after the days hustles and bustles.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I am a single mother of two. My parents have been supporting me but they have since the passed on. Life have been so unbearable. I am a lady of little means and therefore fending for my family especially in providing food is a tall order. That is the most challenging thing I have been facing.
