How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After achieving all the plans I had, I now have a goal of building a chicken coop. This will also allow me to sell the eggs I get and earn an income. I am saving from what I get from my playing pool business towards purchasing construction materials and the chicken.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give directly did well by giving a chance to everyone in my village to participate in the program. We also appreciate the fact that Givedirectly went house to house during enrollment.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my second transfer I spent KES 53150 I opened a playing pool business. For the longest time possible had wished to open the business after doing market research within a nearby shopping center. I am happy that it is doing well and I am getting profits which enables me to cater for my household bills.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was busy working on my farm and I still remember that it was a few minutes past 10 am when I saw my spouse running towards where I was while holding my phone. Upon inquiring the reason as to why she came with it yet I had left it on charging, she informed me that GiveDirectly had sent the promised money. My heart was filled with joy at that instant as it was my first time to receive and own such an amount of money in my entire life and we celebrated the good news as a family. With the money in my account, I knew that our struggles of living in a house with a leaking roof would soon come to an end.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I am currently in the process of building a more spacious iron-roofed house for my family. Upon its completion, my status in our society will be elevated as I will be at a bar with other people. Also, my family will no longer be undergoing so much stress, especially during the rainy season as we will not have to worry about being rained on due to the leaking roof. I always feel happy and at peace when I remember that what we're currently facing is for a short while.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I live in a grass-thatched house and the roof needs to be changed every two years to avoid it from leaking. Of late, getting grass to use in thatching the house has become a problem since most people have ventured into livestock keeping and due to this, my house had started leaking during the rainy season as I had not been able to replace the roof. Because of this, we have always had to move our items from one place to another to prevent them from being rained on. On receiving my transfer, I decided to spend KES 11000 on foodstuffs to last us for some time and some clothes for my children, KES 4000 to buy some timber and I am planning to use the remaining amount to buy other building materials like iron sheets, nails and pay for the labor.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means getting a decent house for my family. Currently I am living in a small grass touched house, the house can't accommodate me and my family. I want to build a bigger decent house which can accommodate my family and when my relatives come they will have a place to spend a night. Every time my relatives come, I am forced to ask neighbor's to accommodate them because we cannot spend in the same house. I will use ksh 50,000 to build an iron sheet roof house of 3 room's. I will spent ksh 30,000 to buy a Dairy cow since I don't have one and the remaining amount will use it to buy foodstuffs for the family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening, when I'm done with my days work. I get to rest and enjoy reading a bible. My day is usually packed with farm activities leaving me tired and evening is the only time I rest.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship i have faced in life is poverty. Without a reliable source of income it has been difficult to meet the basic needs of my family. As the man of the house I have responsibility to gather for the family but I am unemployed, I do casual jobs but when I don't get one it means that nothing to eat in the family.
