How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I intend to start a merry-go-round with my fellow neighbors and friends where I will be able to save up to expand my business. Later on, I would like to start up a restaurant. With these two businesses running concurrently, I will be in a good position to continue taking care of my three children paying for their school fees and other basic needs comfortably.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Choosing what to spend my money on taught me responsibility and the ability to account for every coin whenever I received a call from the office. I am grateful and hopeful that with your continued assistance, our standard of living will continue to rise. I have nothing against the project, but I would be grateful if we could get an addition to help with the high cost of living.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
The second transfer was equally split between my husband and me. From what I got, I took $150 and started a small business selling clothes that I would from one market to another. This business has been doing so well and I get good profits which I use to take care of my three children who are currently staying with their grandmother. Very often I visit them and take foodstuff which they can use. The remaining amount of $110, I used to buy my children some new clothes and uniforms and also replenish the food store.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was working in a canteen with my other two workers, my phone was silent and I didn’t know of any incoming message. I finished preparing the food ready for my customers and took a break around 10 am. As I was scrolling my phone, I saw the text with money received. I was like a dog with two tails and nothing beat my energy and happiness that day as I was serving my customers.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is building a better and more spacious house for my family. Currently, I am remaining with very few materials needed to complete the construction of my home, Before I never believed that I can achieve this goal because my business only gives me a profit of KES 300 which is not enough to support my children and fulfill my dreams. I am excited because with the next transfer, my home will be complete and I can comfortably move out of my relative's compound and afford to have privacy with my children.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a single mother with three children. I live with my extended family and because of many family members, have been living in a small house that is not stable and almost collapsing. Upon withdrawal of the cash transfer, I took KES 45,000 and bought iron sheets, wood, and other building materials for my two-roomed house construction project The cash was enough to start the construction and pay for the labor. I also paid school fees and school uniforms for my three children with KES 7000. The remaining amount was used to buy food which I share with my relatives for the next three weeks.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My small house can not accommodate my family. I am not happy living in such a house. I am a mother of three children and we live in a one-room house. I do not have privacy either. I am planning to build a three-room mud house which can accommodate us. One room will be for my children, the other one for myself and my husband while the remaining one will serve as a visitors room. Iam planning to spend 60000 KES of the transfers to make this a reality.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am grateful for the good health that God has granted me. My family is doing well and that is a big thank you to the almighty.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Financial instability is my biggest challenge. I operate a small hotel in the neighbourhood on which I depend as a source of income. This business has been lagging due to lack of adequate capital to keep it running. when I have exhausted all means of getting it to work it remains closed. majority of my customers are my relatives who owe me a lot of money but are reluctant to pay. This pains me a lot because it is my only source of making a living.
