How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
After settling all the debts that I had both with the nearby shops to the school fees for my children, I had to invest a huge part of the remaining transfer in farming. I needed an activity that I am well versed with and with the available piece of land, I had to hire machinery, till, and planted the land that I am currently weeding. At the moment, I have no additional goal but to work hard and ensure that the productivity of my farms is maintained for the sustainability of my household.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly made an impressive decision that was welcomed by everyone in the village when they brought us support in form of cash. In my household, I was not only happy that I was receiving cash transfers that were not loans but also had the freedom of choosing how to spend them. This served me well since it came when I had a lot of arrears for my four children in school, and also had to invest in both livestock and crop farming. I have a strong feeling that everything was done well and no one has ever complained in the village since we started receiving the transfers.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Having all my four children in school has been a challenge when it comes to meeting all the financial obligations and ensuring that they are set to study without being disturbed. Paying their school fees has always come first whenever we get some money and spending the first and the second transfer from GiveDirectly would not have ended without a pinch ending in the school's account. KES 27000 from the second transfer cleared the remaining terms this year and bought my children new pairs of school uniforms worth KES 7000 to replace the tattered ones they had been wearing. I also tilled and planted a half an acre piece of land at my doorstep at KES 8500 after purchasing farm inputs and paying the labor charges. I used KES 6800 of the remaining on replenishing my food baskets and saved the remaining KES 2500 to meet any upcoming need and serve any arising emergency as well. Even though we are struggling to weed at the moment at the onset of rainfall, I am still glad that the crops are healthy with a faster growth is seen.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
was really happy to receive the transfer and thankful. I was still home getting ready to leave with my daughter. We had to withdraw immediately since i had my child at home who was not feeling that well and I needed her to take the school i received a mesage from Givedirectly while i was still at home gettingbready to leave the house. Lucky enough i had my daughter who is also my helper at home after missing her school simnce she was not gfeeling well. The message excited both of us as we had been talking over and over abou the tranfer throughjout that weerk. She had to get ready and got to town with me where we withdrew, deposited some in the school acount for her school fees and came back home with the receipt that she presented to her teacher the following day. I was thankful that the trasfer was timely and has given ,my daughter a ample time reading without being sent home from school.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the school fees clearance for my children - especially my elder daughter currently in secondary school. The casual labor I had been doing and the milk I had been selling could not settle all the financial obligations I had since I have been dependent on purchases of foodstuff for my household when the seasons fail to favor our farming. I am happy now that my four children can read comfortably without being sent home for lack of school fees.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After several promises I had been making in school over my daughter's school fees, I was glad to finally receive the transfer that enabled me to honor the last promise I had made to the headteacher. My daughter who is currently in form three had been experiencing frequent disturbances from school being sent home to collect her school fees. It was unfortunate that she always had to spend some days before getting back to school with the little amount I would raise from either casual labor or the sale of assets. With the first transfer, I managed to clear the whole debt I had and settle the current term's school fees that saw me part with KES25000. I also had other three kids in primary school who needed a total of KES2000 for their tuition fees. After clearing school fees for my four children, I had to spend KES6800 on foodstuff for the whole household. We had been buying maize in smaller quantities that were a bit expensive compared to the two sacks I bought at once. I invested another KES2000 on tilling my farms and saved the remaining amount to be used during the planting period as I still need to buy the farm inputs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Recieving this money means I will build a discent kitchen that will also host my visitors when they come home, I will also pay school fees for my children and start a dairy farming. I have been staying at home with my children and my husband i a casual laborer at someone's home which is far from our place I plan to spend 400 dollars in building that kitchen, use 300 dollars in purchasing a dairy cow, and spend the remaining in paying for school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiest day is the afternoon, when I have finished working from the farm, I love farming and when I have come from the farm I feel relaxed and happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
We have since been depending from my husband who is a casual laborer in somebody's home, we literally spend the little he gets in buying food, sometimes when I have visitors in my home I end up looking for a place they can sleep which is a shame in our community. My children are never stable in school as they are asked to come home for school fees. All this is a struggle to me in day in day out.
