How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Before the transfers, I did not have a good stock. The business was not doing well and I was struggling to even pay rent for my business premise. I was thinking of closing down the business and try another thing altogether. Before I had given up on the business, I started receiving my transfers. Since then I have been using part of my monthly transfers to boost the business on a monthly basis. Right now, the business is now doing well because of the transfers. The thought of closing down the business is no more.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I plan to continue using my transfers on boosting my cosmetics business. The business is my main source of income and I want to continue to invest more in the business. This is the only way the business will be able to help me in the future after the transfers are gone.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my transfer on paying for medication for my child who was sick and admitted. I am glad I was able to raise the hospital bill without taking any loan or begging for help. The rest of the transfers I have saved. I know the savings always come in handy when I have financial crisis/emergency. Where GD has taken me, I would not want to get back to begging and taking loans as I used to do before the transfers.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I had no source of income and lived with my aunt who was also struggling to take care of her children, being that she is also a single parent. When I became pregnant, I moved in with my boyfriend who also does not have a stable source of income and life became even harder. After I started receiving these transfers, I saw lot of difference because I felt like I was employed. I could support my boyfriend financially, pay my bills, especially medical bills and even save for future plans. Currently, I have a business that I was able to set up through the savings I made from the monthly transfers from Give Directly and happy that I have a job and a stable income, all thanks to Give Directly.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
For a long time, I did not have any source of income and mostly depended on my relatives for financial support and my only desire then was to have a business to support my financial needs so that I would quit being a burden. With the savings I have been making from the monthly transfers I have been receiving from Give Directly, I was eventually able to open a cosmetics shop two months ago which I now want to focus on improving hence no additional goals at the moment.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I recently opened a Cosmetics shop which I have been trying to stock up by buying some of the items that have mostly been requested by my customers yet I still don't have. Most of my monthly transfers after I opened the business have been channelled towards stabilizing the business by buying new and more of existing stock, which is how I spent my most recent transfer.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Clearing the hospital bill to me is the biggest difference that I can proudly mention. To add on that I did a small shopping for my newborn. Had it not been the support from GiveDirectly, I would have cleared my small savings on my account. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for their financial support and being among the beneficiaries.
Do you have any new or additional goals for your life?
I am planning to open a cosmetics shop within the town over the next few months. The capital will be from the savings that I have been able to accumulate so far from the regular money I receive from GiveDirectly. I believe I will be able to generate a good income through this business.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent a larger portion of my most recent money to cater for my medical and delivery expenses in a private hospital. I paid for all the expenses since my husband could not afford to clear the bill. On the remaining portion of the money, I did some shopping on the essentials for my newborn baby and bought some foodstuffs for my family.

Do you have any new goals that you didn't have before receiving the transfer?
My goals now that I have started receiving the money is to revive my cosmetic shop. I am not only planning to revive it but to also expand it. This will help me to earn more income which I will be using to support my family now that I am a single mother. God bless GiveDirectly for they became my aid at a time of need.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life since I started receiving payments from GiveDirectly is that I am now optimistic that I am soon going to revive my cosmetic shop unlike before when I had no means. GiveDirectly came at a time I had lost all hopes of reviving my cosmetic business and I am now grateful to God since my hope has been rekindled once more.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am a business person and I no longer operate this business since the state of my shop is pathetic as the roofs were leaking. When I received my most recent transfer, I spent all the amount to buy some iron sheets. I will use them to renovate my cosmetic shop so that I can start operating it.
Describe the moment when you started receiving transfers. How did you feel?
I was filled with happiness the moment I started receiving my money. This is because I never expected to get any help because most of the aids in Mathare usually goes to the elderly. I was also expectant when I started receiving this money and it came in at the time when I needed help most. My happiness did not end on that day since I am still happy and I believe that my happiness will always last.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I would like to open a cosmetic shop. My aunt gave me a small shop to put up my business. There are a lot of salons in my area and hope to take advantage of them and be able to maximise on profit. I would also want to support my aunt financially since she has no job. I will be paying school fees for her children. Finally, I would also pay rent where I stay with my aunt. She is the one who has been taking care of me.
Describe your biggest worry.
My top concern is getting sick because I don't know where to get my medical bills. I have been leaving with my aunt and we have experienced a lot of financial difficulties. I have never taken any medical cover because I don't have any income to pay for the monthly contribution. Whenever I fall sick I feel threatened and my life is like coming to an end.
What are your greatest ambitions?
I have always wanted to be a news anchor since I was young. I have been very social with people and think that I am good in passing out information. In future I would want to enrol in school of journalism to further my education.
Describe your usual day. How do you spend your time?
I normally wake up in the morning and do my house chores because I don't have any work since I completed high school last year. I relax in our house and sometimes go to my friends shop and spend time with her. In the evening I wait for my aunt's children to come back from school. I wash their uniforms, cook supper, sometimes watching news or even play games from my phone, then I sleep.
