How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Yes, My new goal is to start a grocery business once I feel well since I am currently sick. This is because I am depending on small-scale farming, a job that has not been sustaining my family due to the current climate and drought conditions. Due to this, it has caused a lot of struggle in meeting our needs, especially food, and in most cases we have been going to bed hungry.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly did well for coming into our village to enroll the poor households. In addition, the officer portrayed politeness during the enrollment. I do not see anything that it did not do well during the entire enrollment stages.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the transfer to repair my house so that it may be more permanent. I bought the required building materials which include 15 bags of cement, 10 tonnes of building stone, 10 tonnes of sand at a total cost of KES 19,000. I also set aside some money for the payment of labor costs. In addition, I bought a local dairy cow for KES 18,000. I will be having a constant supply of milk for my family consumption. I also bought a water tank for KES 2000, I will be storing enough clean water for the family. Lastly, I saved the remaining amount for our daily upkeep like food and water.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
When I received the money I was at the shamba looking after my goats. I remember it was around 8am and the goats were enjoying the moist grass before they turn to their poor state due to the high degrees of the sun we're experiencing nowadays. I felt so happy for receiving the money from GiveDirectly. For your I felt like I have been poured some cold water in a warm environment for I felt refresh after picturing how my problems were going to be solved.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Since my husband is very old, he can no longer work to earn us a living, instead he also depends on me. The kind of work I was surviving on was laboring in our neighbor's shambas, digging and weeding for some payments. But of late our living condition turned worse since no one needed their shambas to be worked on since there's no rain. But on receiving the transfer, it was like I found gold, I was able to plan my life without much stress as before. The house is almost complete and am sure with the second transfer I will be able to complete it. Many thanks to the GiveDirectly organization for coming through us during the time we were in need the most.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
On receiving the transfer, I bought building sand and some clay blocks at a cost of KES 5000.00. The sand and the blocks were for pilar construction so as to make my house more firm. I also bought some cement and some food. I saved the rest of the money for the contractor's labour charges and also for family upkeep.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means building a house for my son. This has been my ambition but due to financial challenges, I have failed to fulfill it. He is about to marry but the structure that he lives in is too small that can not accommodate all of the two. I am planning to spend 55,000 shillings to construct a spacious house so that when he got married they can stay comfortable and enjoy their life. Also, I intend to spend the remaining amount to invest in livestock keeping which will act as a source of income once they are multiple.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Afternoon is my happiest part of the day. This is the time when I have time to rest and enjoy chatting with my grandchildren. Unlike in the morning when I am busy with morning chores.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of a reliable source of income is my biggest hardship. I depend on my elder son who works in town as a casual laborer. His wages are not enough to sustain all our needs such as food for all of us 3, because he has his own family to provide for.
