How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Living in a very small house, I’ve always dreamed of having a bigger place, a two-roomed house where I can live comfortably. To turn this dream into reality, I’ve been using my previous transfers to purchase building materials, and I’m thrilled to see my house finally taking shape. How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My plan for this year is to work hard and complete constructing both my son's house and my own. Having comfortable living spaces is of utmost importance to me, and I plan to use my transfers to purchase the necessary building materials to make this a reality. Once the construction of our new homes is complete, I intend to shift my focus to something that will enable me to generate income in the future. I had always wanted to build a house that would be enough for my children and I because the one that we currently live in is not suitable for all of us. The day before I received the transfer, my two grandchildren (in grades 1 and 2) had been sent out of class to clear an outstanding fee balance of $10. Their mother, who works as a housemaid in Mombasa had not received her salary and she could not afford the amount. Also, my business of selling palm wine had not been fruitful that week, and I could not support them. So, I channeled part of the transfer towards clearing the balance and they happily resumed classes. I spent $20 to buy a goat for rearing as this had been my goal ever since I started receiving the cash aid. In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly is definitely doing an amazing job because through it I have to chip in when it comes to taking care of my family since before my husband paid for most of the bills and now I even have an allowance to save up some money to finally build a home.

When I noticed that the funds had finally been sent out, I made up my mind to leave KES 1,000 in my savings account because I was planning to build a new house for me and my family especially one with the roof being ironsheets since my roof at the moment was grass thatched which was always in need of fixing. Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I had actually gone to the farm that early morning when the transfers arrived and when I arrived back home, my brother-in-law informed me that the funds had already been sent out since he had received his. Upon checking my phone as well that is when I confirmed the same fate and I was honestly quite overwhelmed with joy because it meant my kids could finally go back to school and attend class like other children.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I am quite grateful for the generosity I have witnessed so far although this my first transfer because were it not for me receiving the funds when I did, Lord knows how long it would have to taken me to be able to find money and send my children back to school. Therefore allowing my kids to resume school meant the world to me and them.

I was so grateful to receive the transfers from the organisation when I did because my children had been kicked out of school and were staying home due to lack of school fees. Therefore immediately after receiving the funds I went ahead to withdraw the money from my phone and paid tuition fee worth KES 450 for my two children and luckily they were allowed back to class. I also went ahead and used KES 200 and bought a hen because I planned on investing in poultry farming for financial gain. What does receiving this money mean to you?
I separated with my husband three years ago because our daughter got pregnant while in primary school. My husband alleged I was involved in her mess so she sent us away. I left with four children. I had to start selling palmwine in order to cater for our needs. My daughter got a job and she was able to buy a piece of land where we have been staying. I managed to build a small 3m by 4m house where I have been staying with my children and grandchildren who are now grown.Upon receiving GiveDirectly transfers I purpose to build a spacious three bedroom house. It has been my dream to have my children and grandchildren accommodated in separate rooms.This dream will be finaly fulfilled.
What is the happiest part of your day?
When my daughter got a job in town as a housemaid it brought us relief. After separating from my husband, I had nowhere to go. I have for many days faced the wrath of relatives who have handled us inhumanely. Though we managed to get a piece of land we had not been able to fully pay for it till last month when I received 10000KES from my daughter. Since the time I cleared the payment, I have been living in peace and happiness.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Selling palmwine gives me a profit of 200KES a day. We are a family of eight people. The cash obtained is not able to provide three meals a day. In this regard my grandchildren have been suffering from mulnutrion. I have two of my children who dropped out of school due to lack of school fees.Lack of money is the main problem I currently face.
