How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
This year, my main focus is caring for the goats I bought with the previous transfers from GiveDirectly. They've started having kids, and I couldn't be happier to see them multiplying. It brings me joy and satisfaction to watch them grow. Taking care of these goats is not just a responsibility, but a source of happiness for me. Seeing them thrive fills me with pride and hope for the future.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has been very helpful to me. Their programs have addressed my needs perfectly, and I have no complaints whatsoever. I'm truly grateful for all the support they've provided. Everything they've done for me has been just right, and I see their programs as more than satisfactory.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
After receiving $450 from GiveDirectly, I made some important decisions on how to use it. First, I allocated $250 to pay school fees for my kids. Four are in high school, and before, I struggled with fee balances. Now, all fees are cleared, and my kids are back in school, learning happily. I also used $10 to complete a house. With the limited space we had, adding one more room was necessary. Now, my kids have a comfortable place to sleep, and the two who attend day school can use the room to study and do their homework. These changes have made a big difference in our lives, and I'm grateful for the support from GiveDirectly.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Amidst my current commitments, my primary focus is on expanding my goat herd, which currently stands at 16. Despite juggling various responsibilities, such as school fees and the completion of a stalled house, I am determined to save from both my robe-making and selling business and charcoal production endeavors. These savings will be directed towards acquiring more goats. I find goat farming particularly advantageous due to the vast available grazing land and the goats' resilience to drought compared to cows. Through the offspring of these goats, I aspire to secure a sustainable source of income to cover future school fees and tuition expenses for my children. This strategic approach to goat farming aligns with my long-term financial goals, ensuring a steady and reliable means of meeting educational expenses.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my perspective, GiveDirectly is making a significant impact, bringing about positive changes in every household participating in the project. Prior to the program, my family experienced continuous hunger due to a lack of a reliable income source. Since the initiation of this program, my family now enjoys an abundant supply of food, along with other privileges such as new clothes and school fees for my children. Many in the community appreciate the positive outcomes achieved so far, and I hope similar transformations are occurring in neighboring villages. While there is a strong trust in the approach and the process, concerns linger in villages not yet enrolled, unsure if they will ever receive the support. It is our collective hope and prayer that every community gets the chance to benefit from this support and undergo positive transformations for their families.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the second transfer, my priority was stocking enough food for my family of 11, so I purchased 2 sacks for $90. Addressing education needs, I allocated $150 for school fees, settling part of the arrears and enabling my two children in secondary school to sit for their end-of-term exams. Additionally, I bought 5 iron sheets for $55 to progress with completing the construction of our house, which had stalled. Due to a tight budget, I could not buy all the missing materials at once, but I am planning to acquire the remaining 3 sheets soon. Fulfilling a collective wish, I spent $40 on new clothes for all 11 members of my household, bringing joy and gratitude since it's been long since we bought ourselves new clothes. Traveling back and forth from town incurred a $10 transport cost. Lastly, I saved the remaining $105 to purchase goats, anticipating better prices in January after the festive season. We are thankful to GiveDirectly for this generous support, which enhances our well-being and aspirations.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I have a vivid recollection of the instance when I got my transfer. I was at home, engrossed in household chores, when the sound of my phone buzzing reached my ears. I halted what I was doing, read the message, and to my astonishment, discovered that GiveDirectly had deposited money into my account. That particular day promptly transformed into the most felicitous day of my life, as an overwhelming surge of delight and contentment swept over me. Upon my husband's return home, I eagerly imparted the news, and he too was brimming with immense happiness and enthusiasm. Together, we embarked on the task of strategizing and charting out how best to utilize our transfer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The received transfer has sparked a remarkable metamorphosis in my life, infusing me with profound happiness. This financial boost enabled me to secure an abundant food source, guaranteeing that both my dear ones and I won't experience hunger. This feeling of safety and thankfulness fills me with immense delight.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon receiving the transfer, I swiftly recognized the opportune moment to address our most pressing concern by settling our children's overdue school fees. It had unfortunately become routine for them to be sent home due to our financial constraints, stemming from our life as farmers and my husband's irregular casual work. This constant struggle to make ends meet was amplified by the responsibility of our eleven children. In response, I directed $50 towards clearing the school fees, granting my children an unhindered focus on their studies. Subsequently, I spent the remaining $77 to acquire essential provisions crucial for our well-being, while also setting aside $35 for the renovation of our door. The uplifting outcome is that my children can now fully engage in their education, liberated from the weight of unpaid fees.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
For the transfers, we have planned to purchase food. We will use $100 of the first transfers to purchase maize, beans, and other foodstuffs and household goods. We also plan to pay school fees for our children Zilfano, Mercy, and Daisy who are in High school. For the second and third transfers, we plan to complete school fees payment for our children and also complete our stalled house project. This will cost us about $400 for the transfers. Receiving these transfers will surely assist in transforming our lives positively and will reduce the stress I have been going through due to a lack of money.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My happiness in the past 6 months has come from fundraising we held in December 2022. This was one of the happiest moments for me because we were able to raise about $700. This amount assisted us in taking all three of our children, Zilfano, Mercy, and Daisy to school.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
At the moment we are faced with several challenges. One of these challenges is the lack of food. With 6 children that we have to feed and the lack of rain due to prolonged drought, this has been one of the most pressing challenges. In addition to this, we have a school fees challenge. At the moment we have three children, Zilfano, Mercy, and Daisy who are in different secondary schools and accumulatively they owe about $550 in school fees. This is a challenge for us since we depend on casual labor and fundraising to pay. We also live in a small grass-thatched house which is not enough for my husband and six children. We have started constructing a two-roomed iron sheet house but because of lack of money, the house has not been completed.
