How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have plans to develop my grocery business, which I wager could come to pass in the first quarter of 2023. The goal is to serve as the primary supplier for all of the village's small groceries as well as those in other settlements. I hope that using the savings from my two enterprises, I can make this happen.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GivingDirectly succeeded in improving our lives. Given that some of us hadn't handled more than $100 at once since birth, the police who visited our hamlet educated and informed us on how to use the money. They did not separate us either; they treated us fairly and equitably. I would like to encourage them to continue the good work because I do not see anything that needs to change.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received the second transfer, I opted to boost my two businesses to give them life for more profit and reliability. I operate an M-Pesa business and a grocery. Therefore, I used $200 to buy more float to boost the M-Pesa business. By so doing, I increase the profit earned as well as build trust in my customers that they can come to deposit or withdraw any amount comfortably. I also used $100 to buy more stock for my grocery. This enabled me to sell even to retailers hence making more profit. I am so happy because this enables me to provide for my family's needs without straining. Since I have two children who are in primary school, I opted to use $100 to settle their school fees arrears as well as pay for the following term. For the remaining $100 I saw it prudent to keep it for family emergencies.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
As I was serving some clients at my M-Pesa shop at around 4 pm, I received a message on my phone. No sooner had I cleared with them than I took my phone to check what kind of a message it was. I protruded my eyes to be sure what I saw was exactly what it was on the message, this was a surprise after seeing a huge amount of KES 55000.00 that had been sent to my account by GiveDirectly. I almost screamed in happiness but I contained myself not to alert people of the same.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference that I can attest to is the addition of the sources of income. Through the transfer, I was able to start two businesses as well as boost the one that I had. Through these income-generating activities, I am certain that my life will turn into a new leaf and the struggles that I had been going through will be minimal and at long last, they will be off. Much gratitude to GiveDirectly for making it happen because if it were not for them, even the business which I had would have collapsed.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Upon withdrawing the money, since I already had a business structure I decided to start two businesses at the same time. I used KES 20000.00 to open a shop where I sell fast-moving items such as maize flour and other foodstuffs, and also I took KES 10000.00 and started a grocery business right outside the shop. I opted to start these businesses so that they pull together and aid the M-Pesa shop hence enabling me to have different sources of income. Thereafter, I used the remaining amount to add a float to the M-Pesa business to be able to handle more transactions, which means more profit.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have a poultry business at my compound(Rearing local chicken, turkeys, and guinea fowls). The structure housing the birds is little with leaking iron sheets. I will use 50,000 KES of my transfer to construct a spacious structure( pay for labor and building materials including poles, iron sheets, nails, and wire mesh) for my poultry animals and also purchase more birds.
What is the happiest part of your day?
We have been renting for years since we got married. It was my wish to own a place of our own where we won't pay rent but it never happened due to financial constraints. Through God's blessing, we bought a plot and constructed a two-bedroom structure. I am now a homeowner and that is my source of joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I finished my certificate course in early childhood education. I have not yet secured employment. I rely on my husband who is a primary school teacher. His earnings are insufficient for our ever-growing needs. The same salary which has not grown for years now is supposed to support us with food and other household needs like education. This coupled with the rise in the price of commodities has made his earnings barely enough for our ballooning needs.
