Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was at 4pm when I was washing clothes at home and my 3 year old had my phone watching cartoons and I heard a message. When I went to check the message, I was very excited on learning that it was the transfers, I immediately called my husband to relay the good news but he was unreachable. I went back to my evening chores and later called him at 6pm and he was very excited and he promised to come home that evening. The first thing that I thought of was how we were going to build our house.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I thank God because I have been able to buy a bed and a mattress. I used to sleep on the floor on a very old mattress and I could wake up with hurt ribs. Right now on sleeping on a good mattress, I wake up feeling energised and no pains. sleeeping on the floor also had had some wadudu clibing on us. The mosquito net also keeps away mosquitos.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I took $150 as lock savings so that when I get the 2nd transfer I will use it to start a business. I then bought 2 2 matresses and a bed using $180. I had a very old mattress and no bed and we used to sleep on the floor. One of the mattresses was for my mother because she was staying with us as she was unwell. I then bought a mosquito net using $15 to ensure that we were safe from mosquitoes and bought a water container to collect water as we have a water scarcity in our area.and this costed me $29 I then bought some household utensils using $15. I then used the remainder to buy household food items, clothes and on my mother's transportation as she went for prayers when she was sick.

What do you plan to do with the cash transfer?
I have a family of three members and we live in a one room house. The house has an iron sheet roof though it leaks during the rainy season. I do subsistence farming and the husband does casual jobs at the coastal towns making little income that caters for food. I lack the capacity to build a spacious house. I will take $550 to build a three room house for the family using iron sheets . I will also use $ 350 to start a grocery business at Kilifi town. I intend to make a profit of approximately $10 per day. The business will bring a sustainable source of income to my family.
What is the happiest part of your day?
My father in-law has been sick over years and he made avow that once he gets well he would make a very big feast for the family to celebrate. In early December last year he was fully healed and slaughtered a bull for the family to celebrate. It was a nice ceremony that made me feel very happy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Housing is the challenge I am currently facing in life. I live in a one room house with an iron sheet roof. However, it leaks heavily during the rainy season. I spend sleepless nights when it rains during the night hours.
