How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My life is different than it would have been if I never received money from GiveDirectly because I had a small house which could not accommodate all of us but I now have a big spacious house which is comfortable for all of us. I also managed to buy bed and mattresses for my children and they no longer go to the neighbour's home asking for a place to spend their nights. I am also happy we can manage to have all meals unlike the past when we used to skip meals because of lack of money to buy food.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, GiveDirectly does well by giving money directly to the recipients other than asking them to go and collect the transfers from their office. This has helped out a lot with issues of corruption and promoted transparency.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
I spent my second transfer to extend my house which was small for my big family of ten members. My children could not get enough space to spend their night within our house and were being forced to beg for a place to spend their night from the neighbours. We could not even share a meal on one table as a family because some had to eat outside the house because the space we had could only be enough for a few. I had wished to extend my house but could not raise the money on my own because all I earned from the casual jobs I do were being spent to buy food. I am so glad that GiveDirectly came through and I now have a big spacious house that can accommodate the whole of my family.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference is that I am able to feed my family well with ease and settle my bills unlike before this was a challenge.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was so happy when I receive the transfer. I cleared my debts and was happy that it wasn't a scum as other people believe it to be.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent my transfer to clear the school fees arrears that I had. The remaining balance I bought Iron sheets and round poles to extend my house. Currently we my family live in a more spacious house.

What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I am facing is lack of a stable job to get better income. I am a casual worker and get low income hence I can't provide for my children's needs fully like their food and even school fees.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the evening when I know my day has been successful and that I now have money to provide food for my family's dinner
What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a lot to me. I am so happy because I can now afford to pay my daughters school fees. She was recently sent home because of school fee arrears.
