How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I currently want to begin investing in livestock, mainly goat farming. I know it will take some time because I rely on part-time work to make ends meet, but with perseverance and good money management, I will succeed. Even though I would love to start with a cow, there is not much money that can be saved, therefore it will not be possible. As a result, investing in goats will lead to me eventually purchasing a cow.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
GiveDirectly has been a terrific resource for us. We are all more content and grateful to the organization so much. I no longer have to lug water two hours away from my house because I have a fresh water tap that is always running. Not only do I appreciate the organization, but I'm also pleased with it. As of right now, I can think of no area where the company has performed poorly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
From the first transfer, I had started constructing a spacious house because the one I had was very small and congested. Since I used the transfer for other things as well, I was unable to complete the construction. When I got the second one, I prioritized completing the house. As of now, the house is complete and I am happy for living in a decent, spacious, iron sheet-roofed house. Since water was scarce in our area and we had to travel long distances to fetch, I decided to apply for new water connection at my home. The movements tp the government water offices was hectic for me since I am old. I entrusted my son to work on that assignment and I am pleased he did it perfectly. Currently, I have running fresh water tap at my home courtesy of GiveDirectly. I also bought some foodstuff using the remaing amount.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 am when I had gone to fetch some water when I received a message on my phone though I did not hear the message. On reaching home, my family members who were also registered for the GiveDirectly transfers were happy saying they had received their first transfer. Since I do not know how to read, they took my phone to confirm, and lucky enough the transfer message was also on the screen of my phone. I felt so happy for receiving the money that, I did not go back to fetch water for a second trip as I had planned before.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
Initially, getting some food on daily basis was a big challenge for me due to the drought that stroke our area. And for the last three consecutive years, we have not recorded any harvest from our farming projects. I am glad for this organization because through the transfer, we have been able to sustain ourselves as a family and we are getting on well.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
On the very day of withdrawing the money, I bought two chairs and a bale of maize because hunger is the main challenge in our area. Thereafter, I bought some building blocks aiming to build a house because the one I have is not in a good condition. I also opted to do some piping for tap water because we used to fetch some water from a distance something tiresome. As of now, the water has not been connected but soon we will be having tap water at our home. I cannot give a clear breakdown of how each project cost because my son was in charge but I am glad that everything was done well.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
My desire to build myself a new double room house, am living in an old house that my late husband left me with 10 years ago. I live with my 2 grand children who we all share a sleeping space; It's raining inside during rainy season, and also because of strong winds the iron roof is partly destroyed. We feel very unsafe sleeping in this house, because I feel it can bring disaster anytime.
The whole cost of building afresh will run to 40000 KSH, which includes labour and building materials, the rest of the transfer which is 15000 KSH I would love to spend it to buy food for myself and my grandchildren.
What is the happiest part of your day?
Raising my grandchildren from tender age and seeing one of them finish class eight to join secondary school next year gives me so much joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Poor housing is my biggest challenge, we are three and the house has a small space to accommodate us and relatives whenever they visit. The poor roof which gets destroyed by strong winds makes us feel worried. Whenever it rains we have to seek shelter elsewhere and sometimes it's unbearable.
Being a grandmother left with my grandchildren providing for their basic needs has been very tough, especially on matters of food and better clothing like uniforms, I just hope someday I will overcome all this.
