How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My most important priority was to ensure that my family and I had a meal because most times we would days on an empty stomach together with our children which was a very hard situation. I also wanted to ensure I bought my kids a couple of new clothes since the ones they had were quite old and worn out.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Being honest the funds were a great help to me financially, because finally I have very proper Lighting in my house I also bought new clothes for my children and I'm very grateful for that.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I realized that I had I received the money I went on to use the transfers to ensure that I paid for solar energy so that I would have proper Lighting in my house so I paid KES 5,500 for the installation. I also went ahead to renovate some parts of my house so I ended up installing iron sheets which cost me KES 12,000 because every time there it was raining the roof would leak. Eventually I used KES 5,000 to buy new clothes for my children and for the rest of the funds I ensured that we never lacked a meal in my house.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 6 PM when I was taking dinner with my family when my cell phone started to ring continuously. I was a bit nervous and requested my elder son to check who it could be. Upon verifying he realized that it was an Mpesa message from GiveDirectly. We were all overwhelmed with joy and even started celebrating and thanking God for answering prayer.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is that I was able to renovate my house. Initially, it used to leak excessively due to the old roof which could bring loss and damage to my properties. During the rainy days, I used to store them in my neighbor's houses which were a bit hectic. Additionally, my family and I had to sleep at our relative's houses tills the rain stops. It has constantly been affecting our health, especially my three kids. As a mother, it has been stressing me but because I am jobless I did not have any option. My spouse has been the breadwinner who also depended on a low income. The little he could earn could sustain our daily meals. Therefore the issue of renovating the house would take ages. I am so grateful to GiveDirectly for the far they have brought me and my entire household.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying a new wooden bed at KES 5200 and a high-density mattress at KES 5500. Previously I used to sleep on the traditional bed and old mats which were small and I was not comfortable at all. Every morning I could wake up with lots of fatigue and pains, especially in the joints. In addition, I bought a new solar panel KES 5400 which has been of great help, especially at night. For years, I have been using candles but they're a bit expensive and sometimes I could not afford them. To add to that, I bought building materials such as iron sheets, timber, and a metal door at a total of KES 15000. This was for the renovation of my house since it had an old leaky roof which was so hectic, especially during the rainy seasons. With the remaining amount of money, I bought foodstuffs for the family and settled all the pending bills that I had.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Just picture staying in a single-room house together with all your children. My house is so much congested. I stay with my three children under the same roof. Congestion can lead to an outbreak of diseases considering how delicate the immune system of children is. For a better healthy living environment, I plan to use 30,000 KES to build a 3 roomed house that will comfortably accommodate us.
What is the happiest part of your day?
5 months ago, I gave birth to my first daughter making me a mother of three. The first two are boys. I was a very happy mother because I had longed for a daughter.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Unemployment is a real struggle for me. Imagine at just 21 years and already fully depending on my husband. It lowers my dignity as a woman. For the past three years, I have tried to search for a job of being a maid but I have not been successful.
