How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I am currently living in a three points of an acre piece of land that I purchased awhile back. With the addition of the livestock I bought with the help of GiveDirectly, the small piece may not be adequate to sustain them for feeds and even for our own food. This therefore has necessitated a bigger land, which if I had the ability, I will buy another piece of land where I'd plant some animal feeds and food crops.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
What I loved with GiveDirectly is that they fairly distributed the transfer to everyone who qualified in the village. That ensured that no one complains of being given a different amount of money from a fellow villager. I also loved that we were given the transfers for each us to plan and use them in our own needs. Everything, in my opinion, was smoothly done.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I bought an heifer using the for KSh. 22000 using part of the second transfer. This is an addition to one I bought using the first transfer and another that I have been rearing. These, when sold will be a cushion for me in the future incase I am not able to to meet my needs, especially my children's school fees who are in different levels of their education. I also spent KSh. 10500 on three new piece of chairs for our use at home and the rest on food for my family. I am forever grateful for GiveDirectly for uplifting our lives!

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 7 am and I was still sleeping when suddenly I was jolted from my sleep by my phone which was ringing. I wondered what it was all about and hence I decided to check it. I reached out for my phone and I saw that I had a new message. I opened it and I could not believe it when I read that I had received KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I was so happy and I immediately told my wife about it. She was so happy too and we thanked God for the blessing. We then sat down later and we planned how we were going to spend it.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has brought a very big difference in my life and that of my family. This is because we were able to achieve our dream of having a cow of our own. The cow is yet to valve but when it does, we will be able to have our source of milk and we will no longer have to rely on home to supply us with some. Other than that, we have enough to eat since we managed to buy three bags of maize with part of the transfer. The children are also happy because they have new clothes to wear. We are thus grateful to GiveDirectly for me everything.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
We spent KES 25000 of our recent transfer on buying a cow. We bought it because it has been our wish to have a cow of our own. We do not have our source of milk and hence we are usually supplied with some from home for our consumption. When the home cows are dry, I am forced to take some of the milk that I usually sell at my business for our consumption. We were not able to achieve this dream of owning a cow because we didn't have the money. The money that I make from this milk-selling business is not much, it is only enough to buy food, household items, and pay school fees for my four children. Other than the above, we also spent KES 8000 on buying new clothes for our children. We also bought three bags of maize for our consumption at a total cost of KES 12000. We usually grow maize but most of the time it does not usually do well since it gets affected by some pests. We also bought a water container at KES 2000 and a big cooking pot at KES 2000. I have the remaining amount saved, which I am planning to use on paying school fees for my children. Thank you so much GiveDirectly for supporting us.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
The house that I currently live in with my family was built in the year 2008 when I married my wife. My family has now grown and we have five children whom we stay together in this house that has become old and small to accommodate all of us. I am forced to sleep in a kiosk that I had built and my children sleep in this house. Receiving this money will enable me to build a better and more spacious house that will accommodate my family comfortably and enable me to host my guests without any problem.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I harvested two sacks of maize in December that we still use at home for food. Given the fact that our area is not productive, I am happy and grateful that I will not go into my pocket and buy food since the maize will last us for a while.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Our area does not sustain agricultural activities due to prolonged drought and persistent diseases that affect the crops that we farm and I am often forced to buy food to supplement the harvest from my farm. This is a continuous cycle and all the money gets exhausted in buying food hence I cannot provide for other needs such as building a better house for my family.
