How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Since I constructed the current house and demolished the old kitchen I had with the hope of constructing another one, it has been hard for me. I had to use part of the main house as a kitchen as well that would fill then the whole house with fumes from the kitchen. At the moment, I have set this as a goal that I hope to soon accomplish given that I had been able to accomplish a lot that seemed so hard for me.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Everyone who received the transfer in the village made an individual choice on spending that brought a great blend on the spending pattern. Everyone addressed the challenge that they had been going through in their households. In my opinion, GiveDirectly is doing great by allowing everyone to make individual choices after receiving the transfers. everything was done fairly right from the start to the end, and I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the generous support.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent the second transfer on obtaining a new set of furniture to replace the wooden benches that were fixed around the walls of my current house. Since I constructed it, I had been working on several other projects that would not allow me to complete the interior furnishing. I spent KES 27000 on obtaining sofa sets, cushions, and also a cupboard that has brought a lot of order in my sitting room since it has several drawers that can keep books, utensils, and other kitchenwares. I also purchased enough foodstuff for my family of five worth KES 9000 and spent the remaining amount on settling the debts we had and obtaining more items that we had been missing in our household.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was very happy when I first realized late at night that I had received the first transfer from GiveDirectly. Even though it was late at night, I could not resist celebrating the great news. This made it clear to me that the dreams and hopes I had been having were soon coming to pass. I was a little bit confused though since I never expected it to come at night but after checking my account balance, I thanked God in silence without disturbing my child who was already asleep.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The biggest difference in my daily life is the ease of running the daily activities that had been lagging due to the much time that I had been spending oscillating from home to the river to fetch water. Buying a large water tank solved a lot of problems that I had been struggling with and I am thankful to GiveDirectly for the support that facilitated this move.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
It had been a challenge for a long time fetching water both for household use and the livestock, especially during the dry seasons. It was a great opportunity for me to finally invest in a large plastic water tank at KES 26440 together with the gutters and the connecting pipes. At the moment I have been able to set it up and had been collecting rainwater every time it rains reducing the frequencies of visiting the river every day. I also obtained two sacks of dry maize grains meant for foodstuff at KES 6000, a roll of barbed wire at KES 6800, fencing poles worth KES 4000 that enhanced the putting up of a strong fence to restrain my livestock, bought household utensils and other kitchenwares that we were still missing. I am grateful to GiveDirectly for the great transformation that we have witnessed in our household and I am hoping to do more with the second transfer.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a change in my life. I have been a widow for 12 years now. My daily needs is solely contingent on my two dairy cattle. Currently there is scarcity on feeds because of a prolonged drought and therefore they produce 7 litres a day which earns me a profit of KES.400 in a day. Based on my daily basic needs in my house with a family of 3 children I have never done any progress on terms developing my family. One of my elder son had to postponed from joining college after he cleared his secondary level. This transfers from Givedirectly is a prayered answered to my family. I have a plan to buy an incubator and start a business of hatching eggs. This will cost approximately KES.50,000 for 300 eggs. For the remaining amount,I will take my son to a technical training school to unleash his ambitions of becoming a mechanic.
What is the happiest part of your day?
For the last two months, I had a project that had planted tomatoes in my farm. After harvesting I got some good money of about KES.35,000. I then used this money to clear for the school fees balance of my son. The school was finally able to release his certificate which had held back due to uncleared balance. This really gave me joy in my heart.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Currently I have a son who cleared his secondary level, and he has not managed to progress. I am financially unstable and therefore I needed to start a business. When I see him at home doing casual jobs, it psychologically disturbs my mind.I will be at peace when I see him realizing his dreams of becoming a mechanic.
