How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Being a farmer, I have a new goal of adding a dairy cow to my existing livestock. This will enable me to have more milk and hence can sell the surplus to earn an income that I can use to support my kids in school. I also intend to start up poultry farming which will also allow me to sell eggs which will give me more money to settle the house bills.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, Givedirectly did well by alleviating poor households in my village. Everyone is grateful for the support which impacted their lives positively. Indeed Givedirectly left a mark worthy to remember forever.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Currently, I do carpentry work which is my main source of income. Though we all depend on this, it is not sufficient to sustain us. With Kshs.12,500 I bought thirty-two chickens which currently lay eggs and can sell them every week hence allowing me to save for other projects that I have. With Kshs.22,000 I paid college fees for my wife who is pursuing education in a Technical Institute. With the remaining amount, I used to buy food for my household members.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
As a young and developing family, receiving this money means that our dream project of purchasing and rearing livestock for commercial purposes shall commence soon. I was raised in a very humble background where my parents had to struggle to raise and educate us. I am a trained house-construction professional though I am barely three years since I started my job. Following some scarcity of jobs in my filed, the income that we usually attain is just enough to sustain us. Hence, I have never managed to save funds for my livestock-rearing project. Since livestock farming thrives well in our area, and there exist ready markets for livestock products, we shall enjoy substantial profits in the near future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
As a self-employed person in the field of house-construction, the happiest part of my day is in the afternoon when I am handling my activities. This suggests that we shall attain some income for funding pending projects, educating my siblings and providing for my family.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
The biggest hardship I have faced in life is the scarcity of jobs in my field of house-construction. Since my parents struggled to raise my college fees, even by selling some of the livestock we had, I feel that I owe my family a lot. Specifically, as the firstborn in a family of six, I should be helping my parents educate my siblings. Also, I am struggling to provide for my young family. Unfortunately, the Covid-19 pandemic worsened the situation following the economic challenges that emerged. Hence, securing a job has become much difficult for me because I am the one looking for potential employers and I handle the construction tasks.
