How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
To be sincere If I would not have received the transfers, I would not have built a house. From my daily expenditure and compared to my income there is nothing left to save or invest. I was living from hand to mouth and I had not dreamt of owning a brick and iron-roofed house but GD has made this possible. I would have lived in the same conditional for God knows how long.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
Give directly does everything well in my opinion. This is because there has never been an organization that gives out unconditional grants. This was a brave move by GD to elevate poverty. I cannot testify of anything that was not well, everything was done perfectly.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
Upon receiving my recent transfers, I purchased bags of cement and bricks to expand and improve my house. Previously I was living in a grass-thatched house with mad walls which was due to lack of resources and I had to use easily, affordable, and available materials to build the house. I am certain that moving forward I will be like the rest of my villagers who own brick houses and I won't be referred to as the failure.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
Having a permanent house has totally changed my life. My previous house was very small. The roofing was old and the walls were almost collapsing due to the holes that were all over. My children were always sick because of the cold nights. I used to spend a lot in taking them to the hospital each and every time. Apart from that, there was no security in my house because someone could enter anytime and take my properties without my knowledge since the walls had huge holes. Apart from that, whenever it rained we would be forced to sleep at my neighbors home because my house was terribly leaking. The coming of GiveDirectly has brought a big impact on my life because we are now sleeping under a permanent well plastered the iron-roofed house.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was preparing my children for school when I heard my phone ringing continuously. I decided to check the message only to realize that it was from Give Directly informing me they had sent me the first transfers. I was so happy. I always remember that day as is it was yesterday. I still smile whenever I remember this day. It is one of the most memorable moments of my life.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying building materials. I bought a few iron sheets, 14 bags of cement, bricks, and sand. I bought all these with the intention of renovating my house. I had a mud-walled house and a grass thatched roof that leaked a lot during rainy seasons. I later bought a few goats. I have been longing to own some for a long time now and I can't express my joy after buying them. Apart from that, I also managed to clear school fees for my three children who are in primary school. I am glad because they can now study without any distractions. I spent the remaining amount of money to buy enough foodstuffs for my family that would last for some months.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a debt free life for me and my family. Due to unemployment, I have been struggling with paying school fees for my children thus accumulating arrears up to a total of 46,000 shillings. With my transfers, I plan to clear this debt so that my daughter can get her secondary school certificates and be able to proceed to college. The remaining amount will go to house repairs and purchase of indigenous goats that will be of great assistance in future financial needs.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The kind of work I do involves a lot of physical activity because it entails mixing sand and cement for construction. This drains my energy but in the evening am able to rest thus making it the best part of my day.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
With an unreliable income of just 3 dollars on a good day from my casual job of mixing sand and cement at construction sites, meeting basic needs such as food and education has been a nightmare. It has led to an accumulation of school fee arrears amounting to 46,000 shillings which is just out of our reach. My daughter has been unsuccessful in joining college due to this debt hanging over our heads because we have to clear so she can get her certificates. If only we could improve our financial situation then our lives would be better.
