How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
The biggest difference is that I am now hopeful of living in my own home. Through the transfers I got from Give Directly I have already bought the necessary building materials. Initially, I only used to depend on casual jobs. The money I got from these jobs was enough to buy basic needs. I used to save nothing towards this goal therefore there were slim chances of establishing my home. I am happy that soon I will be living with my family in our homestead.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
In my opinion, the fact that the grant issued by Give Directly is unconditional makes it so unique. I do not have to worry about how to pay back the transfers. This is a dream come true.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
When I received my second transfer, I embarked on the construction of a better house and extension of my house. This is a dream come true because with all my efforts I would not have managed to raise enough money to support in building the house. I also paid school fees and a debt that I owed a friend.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The fact that I expanded my business of selling clothes has really changed my life greatly and I can see there is a big difference. This because ever since I expanded my business of selling some ready-made clothes and some materials, my life has been running so smoothly. My profits have increased since I attracted more customers. Previously I used to own the business but then I had to close it down because I had utilized a big portion of the capital. I am so thankful because I revived the business and I am happy it picked up very well. I no longer strain in clearing my bills and meeting my family basic needs like I used to do.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I was preparing breakfast for my children when I heard my phone ringing. This was so unusual because it was still very early in the morning and no one has ever texted me during such hours. I was a bit curious, I decided to check, the content of the message but before I could check, I heard one of my neighbors shouting and singing in excited claiming they had received transfers from Give Directly. My heart started to beat as I became more anxious. I was more than excited, to realize that I had received my transfers as well. It really made my morning.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer on buying some building materials like iron sheets, building poles and a metal door. This was purposely for the renovation of my house which was very small considering that I was also operating my tailoring business in the same house. I felt it was necessary to add another room specifically for my business. I also expanded my business of selling second-hand clothes from my workshop. I had utilized all the capital from my tailoring business because I had some bills to clear, and I had no option. The remaining amount of money, I am spending it on buying some foodstuffs for my children and meeting some of their daily needs.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Receiving this money means a boost in income. I plan to build a room for my tailoring business costing 20,000 shillings and buy variety of fabrics worth 25,000 shillings. This will ensure I attract more customers. I will invest the rest of the transfers in indigenous goats and oxen.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I wake up early to go to the farm to weed my plants, this makes it the best part of my day because mornings are so calm and peaceful.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Lack of capital for my tailoring business has been quite a headache. Countless times have I lost orders from customers because I did not have the fabrics needed neither the cash to buy them. In a month, I make 2000 shillings at most which am sure would double or even triple if I had the necessary materials. This income is too little to feed or cater for other needs such as education for my 3 children.
