How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Comparing my current life with the one I could be living without the transfers, I can boldly say that there are great positive changes that came in. Right from livestock to the clearance of school fees is just a blessing to our household.
In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
We are always thankful since we received the transfer from GiveDirectly, everything that came with the organization surprised us a great deal. Everybody at least took a great leat of development from the initial point they were. on my side I saw my children ent back to school, now rearing productive livestock and also living in a well-furnished house. The freedom to use the transfer in any way we would wish to was the best decision made by GiveDirecly. No one is complaining and I can truly say that all that GiveDirectly is doing in our village is good.
What did you spend your second transfer on?
Upon receiving the second transfer from GiveDirectly, I had a lot of ideas lined up that I was hoping to start and complete with the amount I had received. We had been planning with my household members and based on priorities, we decided to spend the first portion of it on buying a cow - this took a total of 32000 KES. We also had to spend 8000 KES in settling school fees for our children, bought maize which we are using as foodstuff worth 7000 KES, clothing worth 5000 for all the members of the household and used the remaining 5000 KES in sharing to my two sisters who had made a visit to our home. All the plans went well as we had planned and we are really thankful that currently, we can produce milk from our own cows unlike before when we used o buy a lot. Our children usually dress well occasionally which makes them feel good, full of confidence and also boost their esteem whenever they are with their agemates.

Describe the biggest difference in your daily life.
The biggest difference in my life is that I have bought a dairy cow. I was yearning to own one before but since I did not have enough money I had been unable. I used to buy milk from a neighbor and it was so costly for me. I entirely depended on casual jobs in the village to get some money to meet all the basic needs of the family including paying school fees for my children. I did not have time to bond with my children well because most of the time I could wake up early in the morning to look for a job and come home late. I knew this was not good at all but I could not help but go looking for those jobs to sustain my family. At times there were no casual jobs in the village and this meant we could go without some of the basic needs at home. Currently, I have devoted most of my time on my own farm because of the fact that I no longer do much of the casual jobs. I have enough milk for my family and I sell the surplus to meet other basic needs for the family. I also have enough time to bond with my children which I did not have before I received the transfer. My children are no longer sent home to collect school fees because I cleared their fees and this had led to the improvement of performance.
Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
I felt so happy the moment I received my money. I remember very well it was early in the morning that day when I heard my phone ring and on checking to confirm the content of the message, I felt so happy that I had just received a sum of KES 55000 from GiveDirectly. I could not believe in my eyes when I saw this because I had never received such an amount of money before in my life. Moreover, I did not expect that GiveDirectly will fulfill their promise that early. My children and my entire family were equally so happy when they learned about this since they knew that their school fees were going to be paid in time and they will not suffer the shame of being sent home for school fees like they have always been.
What did you spend your first transfer on?
I spent part of my first transfer to buy a dairy cow, clothes and shoes. I also bought food for the family and the remaining amount of money was used to pay school fees for my children in school.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I have always longed to have a cow in my compound. Currently, I rely on casual jobs such as digging and weeding other people's farms so that I can buy some milk for my children. When I was informed that I am one of the beneficiaries of GiveDirectly, I was very happy because I will be able to buy a cow for my children.
What is the happiest part of your day?
The happiest part of my day is in the morning. It is at this time that I feel energized to go and do casual labor in my neighbor's house. I am happy because I know that at the end of the day I will have something (money) to cater for our needs.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
Being a single mother and an orphan, life has not been easy for me. I don't have a constant source of finances to cater not only for the needs of my four children but also those of my sibling who is in college. The bigget hardship I have is that I rely on casual labor such as cleaning, digging and weeding in other people's houses and farms so that I can get some money to feed, cloth and educate my children and sister. These odd jobs are hard to find given the irregular weather patterns we have in our area.
