Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
It was around 9 am when I heard a message alert on my phone. One of my neighbors whom I was with informed me that it might be a Mpesa message from GiveDirectly since she had just received hers. After reading it, I was happy to confirm that it was indeed from them and I whispered a word of prayer to God thanking Him for using GiveDirectly to transform our lives.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
I feel like a heavy burden has been lifted off my life. This is because my son has recovered fully and is at home as I was able to clear the hospital bill using part of the transfer. In addition, my family has enough food and I no longer stress about what we shall eat or whom to request money from. I thank GiveDirectly for coming up with an unconditional cash program that is not biased and is aimed at transforming people's living standards.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
When I received my transfer, I spent KES 15000 to clear my son's hospital bill since he was sick, had been discharged and the only thing remaining was to clear the hospital bill so that he would be allowed to leave the hospital premises. Also, I spent KES 6000 to buy a goat as a way of investing this money and used KES 8000 to pay school fees for my grandson who had been sent back home. Using the remaining KES 25000, I bought clothes, three sacks of maize, and other foodstuffs for the family.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
Recieving this money means I will have better home and my health status will be improved, I have been aspiring to have a descent house made of rough timber and cement the floor. We have stayed with my wife in a muddy house where there is dust all over and hence coughing has been a normal routine to us, which is a health hazzard and being that we are at our older age, we are not able to afford proper medications. We are very delighted about Givedirectly transfers and that I plan to spend KES.70,000 to buy house materials and use the remaining balance to pay for labour.
What is the happiest part of your day?
I am happy during the day, being a farmer I love taking care of the sheep and goats and it's during the day that I take them far to grace them away from home, which I enjoy doing.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
I had children who were in school, and being that I was not employed, it has been a struggle all through to ensure they get proper education, I had to sell all that I had including a piece of land to enable me clear the fees. I was not able to do any development in my home and being that I old now we can not do much but I would like to have a better home to stay.
