How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My house was destroyed by strong winds, leaving me without shelter. In response, I built a makeshift house where I have been staying while I gather resources to construct a new one. I am pleased that I managed to buy building materials, and I am currently in the process of building a new home for myself. I plan to continue using my transfers from GiveDirectly to complete this house so that I can have a comfortable place to sleep, and I am grateful for this support. Once the house is finished, I intend to use my future transfers to buy goats, hoping they will multiply and increase in number and value. This way, I can sell them later and invest the money in a project that suits me, providing a reliable source of income even after this financial aid comes to an end. I am truly thankful for the assistance I receive from GiveDirectly.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My house was destroyed by the strong winds that struck our region, and I was left without any shelter. To respond to this, I had to build a makeshift house that I have been sheltering in as I gather resources to build a new house for myself. I therefore spent $83 of my transfers to buy building materials, and I am now in the process of building a new house. I am happy with the progress I am making and optimistic that soon I will be able to complete the house and have a good place to call home. Additionally, I used the remaining $19 of my transfers to buy food for my family, ensuring that we would not go hungry, especially now that we do not have food in our stores since our farms did not produce anything this year due to the harsh weather conditions.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
In the next few months and years, my biggest goal is to build a home for myself and my family. We lost our house to a powerful storm, and now we live in a small, leaky place that feels unbearable when it rains. I dream of having a simple one-room house where we can feel safe and secure. I'm relying on some upcoming transfers to gather the materials needed to make this dream a reality.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
With $34 of the quarterly transfers, I paid off the debts incurred from giving my late wife a proper send-off last year, bringing me some peace of mind. Investing in the future, I used $35 to purchase a goat, knowing that it would not only multiply but also serve as a financial safety net in emergencies. As a casual laborer repairing local hoes, my income is unpredictable, so I rely on my son, who sells vegetables, for support. Additionally, I spent $10 on buying hens, hoping they'll multiply and provide a source of income. The remainder of the transfer went towards buying flour to sustain our family, especially when my son couldn't provide during the quarter. These transfers have been a blessing, helping me navigate through tough times and plan for a more secure future.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
I have a definite plan to persist in my goat-rearing venture. At present, I have a total of 15 goats, and these animals are invaluable assets that I can rely on to meet my financial requirements. Given my lack of regular employment and the limitations imposed by my age, which preclude me from engaging in physically demanding casual labor, these goats serve as my primary financial security. My strategy involves nurturing this herd, allowing them to reproduce, and thus expanding their numbers. This will enable me to have a consistent source of income by selling these goats when needed to support my household's financial needs.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
My wife has battled illness throughout this entire year, and the expenses associated with her treatment and medications have been quite burdensome. In addition to her ongoing medical needs, maintaining a nutritious diet for her is imperative to ensuring her well-being. Personally, this has taken a toll on my financial situation. However, my unwavering hope remains to witness her recovery and return to full health. Unfortunately, I lack a stable source of income that would have made it easier for me to provide her with the necessary medical care and meet her dietary requirements. My sons, while occasionally offering their support, also face financial instability as they have their own families to provide for. I am immensely grateful for the assistance I have received from GiveDirectly, as it has been a lifeline for us during these challenging times. Whenever I receive a transfer, my top priority is allocating the funds to ensure my wife's well-being, primarily by purchasing the essential medications and nutritious food she requires. I'm also appreciative of the fact that, despite my circumstances, I managed to set aside a portion of the recent transfer and invest it in livestock. Specifically, I acquired a goat and three chickens for a total of $40. I take great pride in owning these animals, as I view them as assets that can serve as a reliable resource in case of any future financial needs.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
Even though my grown children help me financially, I try not to rely on them too much. I plan to start a livestock farm where I will raise goats for sale. This will provide financial security for my wife and me.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
Due to my elderly age, I am no longer able to work as hard as I once did. I sell wooden utensils and tools, but lately I haven't been making enough money to sustain myself. I am grateful for your transfers, which have given me newfound hope because they allow me to purchase necessities for my family. I first bought a goat for $25. I intend to sell it after it has reached maturity. I then spent $34 on medications and $9 on food for my family. The remainder was spent on my wife, who is currently ill and in the hospital.

How is your life different than it would have been if you never received the transfer?
My current goal is to renovate my house, which is currently in very bad shape. Its roof is weak and unstable, which makes me worry that it might collapse on me anytime. I will be saving a portion of the money in order to buy at least two pieces of iron sheets every month. I tried to save some years back but because of the financial hardships I was facing, I could not achieve this. I believe I will be able to achieve this goal since I am assured of receiving a transfer every month.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I spent my most recent transfers on buying food for my household and two goats that I am currently keeping. A food shortage has been my biggest challenge because, for almost two years now, we have not been able to do any farming. I am grateful because, despite the challenges of the drought, my family has had enough food daily, which includes maize flour and vegetables. I also had eight goats, and I am happy I added two more goats through the transfers. I now own 10 goats, which are living assets I can depend on in case of a financial emergency. My aim is to let them grow and reproduce, increase in number, and have many of them. I can readily sell some to cater to my financial needs.

In your opinion, what does GiveDirectly do well, and what does it not do well?
I am appreciative of the organization for providing unconditional transfers to the less fortunate members of society. The transfers I get are crucial to improving my life because they allow me to purchase food and clothing, which was very difficult before I started getting the transfers. As a person who heavily relies on transfers for daily survival, I implore the organization to make sure they are disbursed on time.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I have been making a living by selling jembes for the past twenty years. I made enough money before the drought hit to take care of my family's needs as well as my own. When the drought started three years ago, the situation drastically changed. Due to the drought's uncertainties, my customers no longer purchase the jembes. My business has been severely impacted, and I am now unable to meet my own needs. So when I got my second transfer, I used a sizable portion of it to stock up on food. I went hungry before getting the transfers because I couldn't afford to buy food. I used the remaining $10 to pay a debt I owed my friend in addition to purchasing food. In the past, when I got sick, I was unable to afford the medicines the doctor had prescribed. My friend helped me out by lending me the cash and purchasing the medication. I'm glad that the assistance I received from him helped me feel better after a few days.

Describe the moment when you received your money. How did you feel?
My health was becoming worse, and I was writhing in anguish as I lay on my bed. My neighbor came by to see how I was doing since she was worried. He told me during our conversation that morning that he had gotten his transfer. I gave him my phone to check whether I had received mine so that I could utilize the cash to get further medical help. He gave me the wonderful news that I had gotten my transfer. My plump cheeks were dripping with tears of joy as I knelt next to my bed and said a little prayer of thanksgiving to the Lord. I was ecstatic since I had not anticipated getting such a large sum of money.
Describe the biggest difference in your daily life since you started receiving payments from GiveDirectly.
The transfer has significantly improved my life by enabling me to get medical care for my worsening health. When my health deteriorated to the point that I was on the edge of death, I was unable to contact my son who worked in a distant location to request money. I'm really appreciative of the transfer because it gave me a significant cash boost at a time when I needed it most and had no one to turn to for assistance.
What did you spend your most recent transfer(s) on?
I am really elderly, and because of my weakened health, I frequently spend my time at home. Walking becomes difficult for me since my two legs are in excruciating agony and are covered in wounds. I have been admitted to the hospital on multiple times, but my health has not improved. I presently rely on my son, who is a casual worker in Mombasa, to meet my necessities, which include purchasing food, clothing, and paying for my medical expenses. A week before getting my first transfer, I started feeling quite sick. I tried to contact my son, but it didn't work, so I found it difficult to handle my health situation. I paid KES 800 when I got my transfer to get the right medication for my health. I'm thrilled with how much the funds contributed to my improved health. Along with paying my medical fees, I used the remaining KES 400 to buy food, primarily fruits, to strengthen and enhance my immune system.

What does receiving this money mean to you?
I desire to see my future life be better than it is at the moment. To ensure this comes to reality, I am required to invest in long-term projects that I can depend on. The top one on the list is livestock keeping more particularly, goats that breed so faster as compared to cows. This project is so possible for me because I have a big portion of land where I can graze them. With these transfers, I intend to buy 1 goat every month and within a year, I will hit my target of at least 10 goats. This will be a good start to keep me at a better chance of sorting out needs that might arise in the future.
What is the happiest part of your day?
In December 2021, my job was so profitable because people preferred my wooden dough rollers. In this month, my profit was double say, 1500 KES. This amount helps me to buy some foodstuff for my Christmas celebrations. Therefore, I consider this as what brought me joy.
What is the biggest hardship you've faced in your life?
My casual work of selling some local wood products earns me very little income, say 700 KES per month. Since my children are also in casual jobs, their support is very inconsistent, and sometimes I forfeit some meals. This situation has affected my health status and I am always under stress, something that hurts me most.
